Tho Usual Two Bids
In regard to the men who were
found destitute here and olaimed
that they had beon induced to go tj
Hawaii under false pretense theie
are statements from tho plautalion
men as well aa from those who sup
posed to work on tho plantation
and they are very conflicting
While Messrs Adams and Atber
ton claim that the men will not go
to the plantations to work one of
them named Wtltor Kennoy states
that he is over anxious to find real
good hard work in an interview
with the Advertiser of yesterday in
which tie is reported as SAyitfp
You see we came ftom Boston
the whole eight of us A fellow tho
agent said that wo would have an
easy time of it out in the Sandwich
Islands and that we would not hive
to work very hard We wore to gel
from 22 to 25 a month and the
eight of ui were to live in a furnish
ed houro with all our dishea and
cooking things thrown in Our
food was onlv to cost us about a
couple of dolUra a week and if we
liked fruit all we had to do was to
go out on thu plantation and pick
ail the oranges and bananas and
pinoapples we wanted
Well I was only getting S3 a
week in a foundry and I spont 6 of
that for ray board and lodgiDp
every week I spent the rest in hav
ing a good time on Saturday nights
I thnupht that if I got out to the
Hawaiian Islands may be L could
save sotro money because out on a
plantation I would have no chance
to spend much Yes 22 a month
is not as much as 36 a month I
know but then I wanted to see the
Islands and thought that I would
like the climate I sold my winter
underololhiug and an overcoat in
Vancouver knowing thatI would
not need them down here
Now I am very anxious to get
work in town Where would you
advise mo to look for it Stevedor
ing Isut that pretty hard work
I am afraid that some of us are not
fltrong enough for that I noticed
the natives at work on the wharf
today I dont think that I could do
that work very well No I have
learned no trade I am about 21
years of age and an American but I
havent auy trade or occupation If
I oant got work hero I will have to
go away If I stowed away on a
Bteamer would they put me to work
when they found me do you think
Ob no I wouldnt care to work my
passage to the Coast on a sailing
vessel I have never done that Be
sides they treat you kind of rough
dont they and work you pretty
hard
I would rather starve in town
anyhow than work on a plantation
for tho smll wages they offer
Whats that Theres a law against
starving here Ob you mean the
vagrant law Yes thats so Well
I am very anxious to get work only
I dont think that I would care to
load and unload vessels or shovel
coal or do heavy work of that kind
Ye Im strong enough but I
thought that I oould find some easy
work in a country of this kind I
didnt suppose that a white man
worked hard in thin climate
Why doesnt he become a news
paper man or a reformer They
dont work hard
