Nor THE ONLY PEBBLE

When Mr Dole had hia Iors
under Gorham Oilmans tablo and
was tolliug about the bloodless
revolution of 1891 bo was ungener
ous in that be omitted to give any
credit to the forces of the United
States landed from the Boston
Mr Dole is of record as having
asked Minister Stevens to have the
United States forcip take a more
active part as he was afraid of the
royalists This territory was taktm
from Hawaiisns by tho armed
forces of tho United States and
dont you forgot it Mr Dole You
should keep in mind Xresident
Clevelands messagos to Congress
in one of which he says of Mr
Stevens and of the Boston
It is sufficient to uoe tho faot
and to observe that the project
annexation was ono which was
zealously promoted by the minister
representing tho Unitod States in
that country He ondontly bad an
ardeut desire that it should become
a fact accomplished by his agency
and during his ministry and was
not inconveniently scrupulous an to
the means employed to that oud
The lawful Government of
Hawaii was overthrown without the4
drawing of a sword or the firing of
a shot by a procoss every slop of
which it may safnly be asserted ia
directly traceable to and dopendeut
for its success upon tho agency of
the Unitod States acting through
its diplomatic and naval rnproBen
tativoB But for the notorious predi
lections of the United States raiuist
or for annexation the Gommitteo of
Safoty which should bo callod Com
mltteo of Annexation would never
have existed But for tho landing
of the United States forcoa upon
false pretexts rospooting tho danger
to lifo and property tin comruittoe
would never bare exposed thorn-
solvos to tho pains and penalties of
treason br undertaking the subver
sion of tho Queens Govorument
But for tho presence of the United
States fnruos in the immedhte
vicinity and in position to afford
all needed protection and support
the noinmitteo would not havo pro
claimed the provisional govorument
from the stops of tha Government
building And finally but for the
lawless occupation of Honolulu
tludur false pretexts by he Unitod
States forces and but for Minister
Stevenss feeognifjjon Of teifyrovi
sioual govorument when the United
States forces were its solo support
and constituted its only military
Btrougtb the Quopu and her Govern
ment would never have yielded to
the provisional government even
for a time and for tho solo purpose
of submitting her case to tho en
lightened justice of tho United
States
No Mr Dolo you were not the
only pebble on tho beaoh in Janu
ary 1893 Your boasting1 aod van
ity aro unseemly from this point of
view You may havo fooled your
Boston audiencp but you cannot
fool Hawaihns
