FACTS ABOUT
HAWAII
Father Boannan Writes Ed-
taitalnlj of His Visit to
These Islands
Continued from yesterday
BIRDS OF HAWAII
Owing to tho absence of song birds
a silence reigns over the fields and
woods of the islands Wo saw some
pretty little native birds of green and
red colors also wild doves finches
and sparrows but tlioy are all song
less One species of the native birds
is adorned with a yellow feather
which was formerly much prized as
an adornment for the royal robes
The interesting bird of the islands is
the Mlnah imported from Asia to
kill the army worm a task which he
accomplished with great ease The
Mlnah has multiplied until he Is ev
erywhere in evidence He certainly
Is an interesting little fellow and is
about the size of our American robin
and like him fond of dress parade
on the campus He Is saucy and
game and stuts like a Bantam roost
er He has the color of a catbird the
head of a crow and tho wing of a
mocking bird Like man he is omni
vorous and not always select In his
company Wo have seen him in tho
trees devouring sweet buds We have
seen him in tho pastures perched on
the back of steers and strutting up
and dowii as though he owned the
held Ho Is very fond of cooks and
we have often seen a pair of them
hanging around the kitchen waiting
for a handout The Mlnah does not
sing but ho has a little cat call of his
own It is medley between the cry
of a jay and a blackbird About dusk
the Mlnah liocks in hundreds to the
place of general assembly This Is
always the top of some high tree near
tho house of a nervous man Tho
meeting always opens with a hattlo
for reserved seats and the uproar
goes on for about an hour The only
thing to which this noise can bo
likened Is tho heard during
recesses at a womans convention
Matters aro finally arranged and
all hands settle down to deep slumber
which Is broken only by the occa
sional snore of somo old fellow who
Is quickly called to ordor They begin
in the moiuing about four oclock to
discuss with dreadful chatter the or
der of exercises for tho day nud at
suurlso they bid each other a loving
farewell promising faithfully to he In
tho dormitory ut tho evening jollifica

HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE
The Hawaiian language Is ontliely
Polynesian and with Its many pre
fixes nud affixes to unchanging roots
resembles tho Hebrew The alnhubel
embraces but twelvo letters and the
entlro number of woitls Is less than
10000
A vowel Is never followed by more
than one consonant a thing which
makes tho language sweet and musi
cal A word according to its accent
and position has a variety of mean
lngs The word Kanaka by wlilcll
tho natives are sometimes known re
ally means man In distinction to wo
man Hence to call a native woman
