The VeDice Campanile
General Mourning Throughout
h World Caused by
Its Pail
If you can imagine thousands of
grown menand women In tears at he
collapse of a pile of brick and mor
tar when not a single human life
was sacrificed In the ruin you can
form some Idea of the sadness follow
ing the news of the falling of the
Campanile of San Marco No human
catastrophe that I have ever known
has spread a wider wave of acute
grief In London at the clubs In the
homes on tho streets In fact every
where It was Impossible to escape
discussion of the fall of the tower
oi fall to observe the tons of univer
sal grief It was only a pile of brick
and cement placed In an awkward
position among a gioup of famous
buildings Most of those who saw it
for the first time bringing with them
preconceived ideas of regularity and
primness quarreled with the builders
and architects of the tenth century
because they had perpetiated such
an abortion in the midst of such
architectural loveliness as surround
ed It Yet these very critics were
forced to give expression to their sor
row when the telegraph spread the
news over the world that the famous
monstrosity had fallen into a shape
less ruin
Hopkinson Smith in his Gondola

great Campanile in glowing terms
So have Ituskln and thousands among
artists in published expressions Add

millions of lay travelers have written
their impressions In personal letters
A multiplicity of pictures In every
medium from the earliest drawings
to the latest masterpieces of photo
graphy hung on tens of thousands of
walls have spread the fame of the
giant steeple and Its distinguished
life of a thousand years
The telegraph rcpoits tell us that
thousands of mourners surrounded tho
shapeless pile of what had been a
curiosity of art and cried like chil

tho moment of disaster who could re

stately palace of tho Doges in tho
famous library of Sansovino In the

been used from time to time to
