Residing In Honolulu
TUESDAY MARCH 31 1903
NOT A BUILDING LIBN
Attention was recently called in
the Advertiser of an appeal for
money by the Bishop of Honolulu
This appeal is to be in the shape
of an Easter Offeringthe major part
being to pay off a debt of 1753 80
due to Bishop Willis Jt is held aud
claimed by some that this debt due
is a debt on the Cathedral building
and if so how came Bishop Willis
to conseorate it with this debt hing
ing over the building But those
who so speak are toe narrow to see
how it was treated anything but to
have a chance to say something
against our good retired Bishop
tutor and mentor We hope iu this
article to make clear how this debt
came to be due
Many years ago when the debt
upon the Cathedral building due to
the builder amounted to 5713184
but this has been year by yeir re
dused until only 175380 remains
today When the debt was at the
larger ambunt then there cropped
up a controversy between the Bishop
and the then Board of Trustees as
to the integrity of the Church pro
perty Tbe Trustees wanted to ex
change a bit of property for a right-of-way
on to Beretanla street but
the Bishop would not have it This
exchange was insisted upon still the
Bishop was obdurate and steadfast
in the earnest belief that tbe Church
property was a sacred trust and as
auoh was to remain inviolable and
Church property for good aad for
aye
Much friotioa was thereby amus
ed the ultimate outcome of which
was tbe resignation of the Trustees
the Bishop insisting that the num
bers of the Board should each bear
a portion of the deband in the case
of the proposed exohange thy
shiuld buy the property intended
or the exohange and transfer to the
Oiuroh But tbit they did not want
When a majority of them resigned
a new Board was filled by appoint
ment ol tbe Bishop and upon it de-
tj
volvod the tak of liquidating this
balance of fho dobt of nearly 7200
Then it w8 that the Bishop as
sured the Society for tho Propaga
tion of tbe Qogpol of London that
the Church proporty was wholo and
inviolable and thereupon it gave a
grant of 500 whioh it had promis
od doing as 8oon as the assurance
was made by the Bishop This grant
was subsequently applied to reduo
iug tho debt the balance of which
was paid by the Bishop himself tho
Trustees holding themselves respon
sible to the Bishop for that balance
which has baen yearly reduced by
contributions till only this sum of
over 1750 remains unpaid
Yet this unpaid balance b not a
oharge upon the church struoture
There was no lieu upon it whan Bi
shop Willis conseorated it on March
9th of IaU year the only lien that
to the builder having baen removed
years before by tho debt due him
being paid by tbe Bishop and per
sonally assumed by the Trustoes
The Board of Trustees of the An
glioan Ohuroh in Hawaii has since
been supercoad by the Boird of
Directors of the Protestant Episco
pal Church in the Hawaiian Island
but tho responsibility for that debt
has not changed with the annexation
of the Diocese nor with the transfer
of juriadiotion That debt today is
an obligation upon the Direotors to
make good for money loaned and
advanoed to relieve the edifice from
being held as security or lien for
the debt then due but whioh be
came yearly lessened by tbe peoples
generosity leaving only the balance
now being sought to make a final
settlement
And now comes this appeal of our
present Bishop to the members and
attendans of StAodrews Cathedral
upon the Bubject of the Easter Of
fering partly to pay this debt due
to Bishop Willis for money advanc
ed by him to pay the contractors
when the Cathedral was brought to
its present state in 1889 together
with another for connecting the
Cathedral property with the sewer
system by order of the Board of
Health making the sum of 2500 as
the real needs of the Vestry for such
an offering It is now up to the peo
ple to respond handsomely and lib
erally We hope we have sufficient
ly explained it dearly enough to Bet
all at rest
