CORNER FORT AND HOTEL PIENNI FI COMITH. MAYOR ROSE OF MILWATJKEE TO BE TEMPORARY CHAIRMAN". Four Contostlne Delegations Present Tholr Claims Bofore tho National Committee. KANSAS CITY, June 30. Mayor Rose of Milwaukee Is scheduled as temporary chairman of the Democratic convention, and James D. Richardson of Tennessee as permanent chairman. Sof ar "as Committee is informed, the conrention vrill have four contests to decide. Only one of these contests Involves a State delegation. Two of the others refer to tho representation of Territories, and the other to the District of Columbia. The State contest is over the representation from Montana and the two Territories involved are Oklahoma and Indian Territory. The greatest interest centers in the Montana contention, because of the Clark-Daly feud, which found such bitter expression during the last session of Congress in the fight over the seat of Hon. V. A, Clark in the Senate. The advanco representatives of both factions are already here, and they are qui to busy In presenting their respec tive claims to recognition. Senator Clark will head the delegation bearing his name, while the Daly delegation Is led by Hon. Martin J. M&glnnis, who received Governor Smith's appointment for Senator, as Mr. Clark received the appointment "by the Lieutenant-Governor in tho absence of the Governor. In this contest both the Clark people and the Daly people claim regularity. They held separate State conventions and both were held la Butte on the same day. Some technicalities are Involved in the case, but it Is essentially a fight for supremacy in the party in the State, and it bids fair to be very bitterly contested. La the case of the District of Columbia, the factions arc known as the "Norrls" and the "Holmead." The regular delegation Is headed by National Committeeman James L. Norris. while William Holraead gives name to and Is a member of the coatestlng delegations. Holmead's people allege gross fraud In the election of regulars. In the Oklahoma contest the factions are known as the Slpee and Jacobs factions. The Indian Territory controversy Is based upon a fight over the membership of the National Committee. This proposition Is now held by Thomas M. Macrum, who heads one delegation. These delegates are contested by the TVolvertos, faction. Both delegations were csgmb. by separate Territorial co&Tefttioss, held in Ardawre os.. the 11th of June, and both claim te &e Jar. The five men most often mentioned in connection with the chairmanship are J. M. Johnson of Kansas, chairman of the Executive Committee, Mayor Taggart of Indianapolis; National Committeeman Daniel W. Cam-pau of Detroit, Tom L. Johnson of Cleveland, and ex-Governor William J. Stone of Missouri. There has been some question as to whether Senator Jones would accept a re-election. It can be stated positively that he will. FIRE AND DEATH ON A WHARF (Continued from Page l.j fiercest the officials of the Hamburg-American Line decided that the only way to prevent a total destruction of their great pier was to blow up the side of tho dock at which the Phoenicia lay, and this was done. A number of barges docked at the pier also took fire, but in the effort to save the other property no attention was paid to them, and they were allowed to burn. When the fire broke out such headway was gained by the time the Hobo-ken Fire Denartment arrived that they were utterly helpless to copa with thrT" dames. Calls were made to tha New Vork Fire Department for asj'staacv, and fire tugs were sent over. These, however, had little effect on the great mountain of flame and smoke. When the Hoboken firemen reached the fire they set out to confine it to the pier on which It started. They get their lines out on the two adjoining, and even ran their apparatus out to !)mp from the river. When the names spread the hose on the pier was lost-Some of the apparatus narrowly escaped being consumed, and as it was, one hose cart and its horses were burned. Later, Jersey City stripped Itself of all the hose possible and sent It to the Hoboken firemen in a wagon for use. With this streams were later turned on the fire, but It was then under control, having burned Itself out. A Minister's Good Work.
