INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER.
Newsjmperdom. n journal devoted explosively
to the interests of newspaper
ptiblibers. in the latest issne receive!
here dLcussses at some length the
tewlency towards independent
a-i ncainst hidebound party
which must accept what their party
does and their party candidates do, re
panllcj of whether the partv is right cr
wrong, or whether or not candidates are
unfit to bold public oflice.
IJiis"ing th party organ whic'i
stand for party above everythinc else.
it sny: In any other capacity than
an advocate of his party and its principles,
the editor bears an excellent reputation
for proliitv. but let him dabble in
political writinc. and off drops the mantle
of honesty, and he becomes, to the public,
a man of norals and questionable
honesty. Aid why? Recause of his
blind following of party, which places
him in the public eye as n puppet of
powers political. Naturally, readers of
hi pnier question the sincerity of his
editorial utterances made under fear of
party disfavor or with a desire to procure
political "pap."
All of which is contributing to the
passing of the partisan uewspaer and
the rise of the independent newspaper.
As indicating the growth of public sentiment
in the direction of an independent
press, there has leen a great increase in
the numlter of independent journals witL
in the iut years, newspapers not
neutral in iKilitics. but recognizing obligations
to readers rather than to party
newspapers of the tyie of the Minneapolis
rimes, whose recent utterance respecting
the independent newspaper contained
the following:
"It has become more and more apparent
that ns the republic grows older, ns
education is more widely diffused ami
(ns a corollary) men think not only
more, but more to the purpose, the function
of the independent newspaper is
letter and better understood,
the need for such a paper is becomin:;
more widely recognized, and patronage
therefor is growing apace. The runes
is gratified that the above postulates find
support in its own case. As pointed out
upon many -occasions in these columns,
an independent paper is not one without
convictions, nor without obligations. It
must have convictions ns to what is right
and what is wrong, especially in matters
of grave, public polity, and it always
rests under the obligation to its readers
to tell the truth, and to do so fearlessly.
Convictions, however, which must ruu
along the groovat prepared by
or digged by partf bosses, or obligations
to political partisans as such,
need form no part of the creed of the
truly independent newspaper."
Despite the a.titude of tho Advertiser
it Is Mfe to sav that 90 per cent of the
people of ilonol llu are in favor of municipal
government. Any candidate on
the republican ticket who thinks with
tbe Advertiser that such legislation is not
"practicable" now would better prepare
at once for a political funeral on
t!tli with himself as the corpse-

SAD FLIGHT OF AN ORATOR.
Eon. Henry Smith 01ud to His
Chair Create Laughter,
I From the Chicago
GRASS LAKE, Mich.. Sept. It!. The
Grass l.ake News is responsible for tbe
following;
The meanest scalawag in Michigan
lives over iu Augusta township, Washtenaw
county, and we'll proceed to prove
it. Hank Smith was billed to speak at a.
school houe near AVhitcomb, whn a
club was to be organized. The
room was jammed full of men, women and
children. A little platform had been
arranged for the orator of the
evening, surmounted by a single chair,
the seat of which some miscreant had
covered with fresh glue. In this chair,
to which he waa conducted. Hank sat
down, not knowing it was loaded. Alean-time
the burbgers proceeded with their
work", and an hour was consumed before
the officers were elected and the job finished.
The new president tbeu stepped
forward and introduced "the present and
the nest congressman of this district,
the Hoa. Henry C. Smith of Adrian."
Mr. Smith got up and so did the chair!
He tried to shake it off by a hip wriggle.
This -failed. He readied down aud tried
to pry iroff with his fingers, but without
sucrvss. He pulled sturdily at the rear
to force It to let go. but it wouldn't do
anything of the kind. JJe now smelt a rodent.
The president, seeing his predica
ment, stepped up and gave the thins such
a tug that ftaiitii in alarm, but in an undertone,
said r
"Hold on. Ferguson, youll tear the
cloth away, and you can are my coat ia a
short sack, and there are ladles present."
The audience sor tumbled to the situation
and instantly bunt into thaaderbg
guffaws. The room .became a, bedlam of
laughter-convulsed lunatics. The women
screamed and the children whooped. whUc
able-bodied men lay down on the benches
and roared. The hilarity waa eatching.
and soon Hank,- genial-hearted and fun-loving
as he was, sat down, leaned bark
aad joined tbe deafening chorus. Finally,
waving his hand, the crowd became sufficiently
quiet to hear him say :
