the independent newspaper contained

"It has become more and more apparent
that ns the republic grows older, ns
education is more widely diffused ami
(ns a corollary) men think not only
more, but more to the purpose, the function
of the independent newspaper is
letter and better understood,
the need for such a paper is becomin:;
more widely recognized, and patronage
therefor is growing apace. The runes
is gratified that the above postulates find
support in its own case. As pointed out
upon many -occasions in these columns,
an independent paper is not one without
convictions, nor without obligations. It
must have convictions ns to what is right
and what is wrong, especially in matters
of grave, public polity, and it always
rests under the obligation to its readers
to tell the truth, and to do so fearlessly.
Convictions, however, which must ruu
along the groovat prepared by
or digged by partf bosses, or obligations
to political partisans as such,
need form no part of the creed of the
truly independent newspaper."

the officers were elected and the job finished.

the Hoa. Henry C. Smith of Adrian."
Mr. Smith got up and so did the chair!
