It was a'Wrm summer night near the middle of the last beat of the policeman on the four sides of the green rectangle of 5Iadion Squari park. Suddenly into the dead calm a shrill cry projected itself: '"Help! Help! 5Iurder! Police!" Into the park rushed the police, the leather thongs on the night sticks In place for blow striking. They're killing me! Quick! Quick!" spurred on their footfalls. The policemen made a systematic search of the green area, ending finally in the center. The same voice called with. a mocking cadence: "Rubber! Rubber! Rubberneck!" Slowly and wearily the four converged on a bench a little to the south of the center, which seemed the source of the voice With an affectionate prolongation of each syllable there came in Boston accents: "Rubtah! Rubbah!" From the branches of the maple overhead a hoarse ehuckliag came. Polly watsa2crttciar!" a wheedling voice gitly"iariu:atedr 4 r A Thai'yaB hsitnKluc6aatto tJte.jojrk. IStihS Sensation About Arrest of Jason Chiu Punctured. An abortive attempt upon the part of a local morning paper to make a large sensation out of a very small Chinese affair was the cause of much merriment among federal officials yesterday. It was all about the arrest of a Chinese mess boy, Jason Chiu. who slept in the city prison for being ashore from the transport Solace, presumably contrary to the orders of the collector of customs. It appears that Captain Wiuslow of tlie Solace and Collector of Customs Stackable had a discussion about allowing Chinese from the transport to land. Captain Wiuslow gave in to the collector's request to not allow them to land, but the executive officer of the ship did not fully understand. Contrary to the captain's orders he allowed Chiu to go ashore, but did it Ifeeause he thought the order did not cover this Chinaman's case, who claimed to be of American birth. Upon this information Chiu was released without the aid of habeas corpus or any of the program laid dowu for the federal authorities to follow. Chin simply left with his ship. Half-mourning being so much a necessity has made it fashionable. For instance, a gray, striped, plain skirt had a little coat to""correspond with a huge round collar of dull black silk, braided in a black and white scroll design. It was finished with large cuffs to match and buttons of the plain, black silk "frock coat description. The lining was also black, for black linings are being put into the very smartest frocks of the tailor-built order. Of black and gray, too, can the most original evening gowns be created. A beautiful pearl gray satin had incrustations of black lace set in, studded with jet and steel sequins. It was cut a la empire, with a cuirasse of the jetted lace falling loosely fromthe bust line to just above thewaist. where there was a wide band of pearl gray velvet. This was, of course, a half-mourning costume, and. perhaps, on that account, somewhat somber. but.it was a relief after badly mixed bright colors, and above alL it was un-mistakably Freaehf How -fond Frenchwomen are of wearing gray! and yet their complexions aG not. as a rule, good.
