"TWO m fit-l A i j. ALalv - "-' "XUfcfl me amvai u m 5 fr Xinoon Mam yesterday ' M f there were no foreign ar- XJ rivals. The big Japanese j liner made a very fast gnnn' run from San Francisco, nort she left on the Otta inst.. at 2 P- m. She was reported off Koko Head at a little before three, thus making the trip in about six davs. The vessel has not many passengers, but has all the freight she can carry for the Orient She will take three hundred tons of coal here and hTe for Japan and China at noon. Purser Slocum. so well remembered her. is the new purser of the Nippon, vice Purser Keyes, resigned. The bis transport Meade will get awav for Guam, Taku and Manila today at 3 o'clock. She has been delayed in taking coal by the poor arrangement of the vowel for loading fuel and also by the fact that she had to take so large a quantity. Improved Propeller. Considerable interest is attached to the present trip of the gasoline schooner hclipse, which left last evening on her rfgular run to and Kona port. She has been on the drydock having a painting and some little repairing done, and while on the ways her propeller was taken off and treated at the iron works undei the direc tion of Captain He has had patented an idea of his that a propeller with a silt cut in the blade running at right angles to the hub of the propeller saves friction, or rather does nway with a good deal of it. The lessening of the friction means a saving in fuel'ur a gain in speed, or probably botn. The Idea has been tried on the propeller of Larsen's launch and on the steamer J A. Cummins, and with a marked saving of fuel. The only drawback in both cases is that the amount of fuel used before the propeller was installed on the boats is not known to a nicety. In the case of the Eclipse a careful count of the amount of gasoline used for several months on the trips and the actual number of turns made by the propeller in going a certain distance has been recorded. Having those figures to work on, there is every hope of a successful .est of the boat with the improved propeller. Captain Macauley claims for his idea a gain in speed with the regular amount of fuel expended before the Improved propollor is installed, or a saving of and a maintenance of lho same speed. The gain is not a very great one as appreciated by the small vessels using the propeller, but is aulnclent to mean the saving of thousands of dollars in the consumption of fuel on a big ocean liner. Captain Macauley and his friends confidently expect the trial of the . Eclipse to show that the improvement is ti real step toward the solving of the expenditure for fuel that all steamship companies are on the lookout for. Lights That Confuse. For some timo the Japanese fishermen have been using lanterns on tfieir boats while at anchor outside the harbor. These lights are fixed to the bow of the boats and aro but a couple of feet above the water at the most. On any evening after dark the lights, a score or moro of them, may be seen at sea a short distance from shore. These lights extend from Diamond Head to the entrance of Pearl River and as they bob about are like the lights on buoys. A stranger mariner coming here at night is very to be confused by the lanterns as it slav tlmes happens that a couple of the boats will tie up to a buoy there is liable to be trouble. The other right when taking out a steamer Captain Cameron was mystified by seeing lights on one of the channel buoys where there should have been one. He could not understand it and so went to investigate. On arrival at the buoy he found two Japanese boats tied to it and the buoy light and the two boat's lights were burning. The occupants of the boats were sound asleep and were awakened and told to move on. Something should be done to have the Japs have their lights fixed to their masts at some distance ajove the water so that a seafaring man coming here in the night may see what it is and not mistake It for something else. Navigation School Opened. The Inter Island and Wilder Steamship Companies have opened a school of navigation for their officers and sailors. All men connected with the vessels are welcome to get instruction in practical navigation free of cost-Captain Robertson, the well known navigator, has been employed by the companies to give instructions In the navigation of ships and a meeting will be held on the Knau on Sunday evening at which captains and mates will be present. On the following evening there will be a meeting for persons speaking Hawaiian, and Captaia Robertson will make up his classes. It Is the Intention of the companies to give their Hawaiian employes a chance to become navigators and have pilots licenses Issued to them. Some of the best pilots on the islands are Hawaiians as are also somo of the most capable mates and if the companies are to loose the services these men they will be greatly handicapped. As far as theoretical navigation goes these men know about as much about it as a shoemaker does about tuning a piano. But as practical pilots they arc most capable and as mates are very trustworthy. Hanalei Launched. SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 6. The new steamer Hanalol for the Inter-Island Steamship Company of Hawaii will be launched from Hay & Wright's yards jvevt Saturday. She will run in the inter-island trade and will add one more to the fleet of Tessels that was built In California for the trade In the Southern Seas. Lawless Remembered. -AN FRANCISCO. Dec. 5.
