Last evening only two of the Portu
guese immigrants by the Amana were
left at the depot All the rest had
been engaged and departed to the
scenes of their future labor among the
cane I he gsod appearance they pre
sented after their long rough and
inclement sea voyage has excited gen
eral admiration of their treatment on
b ard ship Many of themselves have
spontaneously requested Mr Cana
varro Portuguese Consul to write
home and convey their grateful appre
ciation of the constant care for thejr
health and comfort evinced towaid
them throughout the voyage by the
captain doctor and other officers of the
snip Hawaii need have no fear of a
dearth in the labor supply so long as
immigrants are as well cared for iis
they have been in this case
THE CABLE PROJECT
A recent letter from London says
MrSandford Fleming CE one of the
chief promoters of the scheme is hope
ful that the Imperial and Colonial
Governments will grant subsidies to a
cable from Vancouver Canada to
Brisbane or Sydney touching at the
Hawaiian and Fiji Islands The same
letter indicates that the project of a
steamship line over that route is in the
same position that it was when Lord
Salisburys former Cab net resigned
NOTES AND COMMENTS
The Madras case is settled so far as
the ship is concerned she having been
hopelessly stranded on the China coast
Yes every mothers son of the Chi
nese and of every other nationality
too guilty of carrying concealed weap
ons should be hauled up and punished
with the utmost rigor of the law
Mr Dare evinced a return of his
natural independence yesterday by
voting against the Hawaiian quackery
bill It is to be hoped the Attorney
General will give attention to trie
further development of that vein
Two members of the New South
Wales Legislature recently had a dis
pute out with fists on the floor of the
house They should be transported
to this country to learn parliamentary
decorum from the placid native Ha
waiian legislator
Mr Gibson yesterday voted for the
bill to provide for a Hawaiian Board of
Health which is to promote the health
of natives by subjecting them to the
treatment of kahunas This is the
more remarkable from the fact that the
bill is a pronounced expression of
native want of confidence in the ex
isting Board of Health as adminis
tered by the Premier
T ie Government organ suggests that
legislative procedure be reformed so
that money vptes should only be initi
ated by the Ministry This is desira
ble and has been advocated frequently
by the present writer in the Honolulu
press But before the idea is realized
we nusr have Ministers who could
afford to call their souls their own a
Finance Minister capable of framing
precise and comprehensive estimates
and above all a Prime Minister who
could formulate a definite policy and
stick to it for two days in succession
While talking of Chinese walking
arsenals a word is due drivers of that
nationality Most of them who are
permitted to drive horses through the
streets do not know how to handle the
noble animal Only that their horses
are mostly as jaded as themselves are
stupid accidents from their clumsy
tne problem and evolved n rlpclrm
which was chosen and which it is pro
posed to execute On the eve of
accomplishment however a French
savant comes forward with a timely
warning of the fearful consequences
which the building of the iron tower
will entail He says that the enor
mous blocks of iron running noith and
south would become notarized and
that tliis polarization will soon invade
the whole column Then who knows
whether the four lifts with their con
tinual friction will not increase the
magnetic influence a hundred fold
In this case all articles for a mile round
will be attracted to the tower and will
adhere to it as a needle does to a
magnet
If the troops quartered in the Ecole
Mititaire hard by be called out to drill
it will be all in vain for the command
ing officer to shout En avant 1 if
tney are paraded w th the column be
hind them Then all the hoiises in
Paris will suffer from a St Vitus
dance and being gradually drawn
toward the Champ dc Mars will finally
una tnemsclves stuck to the tower As
for locomotives entering Paris it will
be found impossible to stop them at
the various termini they will rush
through the city and dash themselves
to pieces against the center of attrac
tion These and other evils we are
told will follow the erection of the
great Eiffel tower which might indeed
be called the Teufel tower Electric

Forgot Gordon Bonds In Egypt
A melancholy illustration of the diffi
culties still attending and likely for a
long time to attend the work of es
tablishing the administration of Egypt
on a pure and reformed basis is afforded
by the discovery which accordinc to the
Cairo correspondent of the Daily
Chronicle has just been vnade at the
Ministry of Finance This is nothing
less than a conspiracy to defraud the
Egyptian J teasury to the extent of
some 30000 by the issue of fictitious
Gordon bonds It is stated that in
this detestable attempt to utilize for
dishonest gain the name of the dead
hero of Khartoum several Govern
ment officials are implicated Should
the criminal endeavor be brought home
to the suspected persons it is to be
hoped that British influence
will be used to secure that
they suffer exemplary punish
ment But the fact if such it should
prove that among those employed at
the Ministry of Finance- there arc a
number who were ready to clutch at
lucre through forging the signature of
the strong hand which for so many
weary months held back unaided the
tide of a rebellion helps to show how
far we are from having found or form
ed a class of native Egyptians who
could be trusted to conduct the affairs
of their country with a single eye to its
real welfare and credit And all this
is above and beyond that problem of a
stable settlement of affairs on the side
of the Soudan which is again begin
ning to press heavily on our rulers and
as to which it may be hoped that they
will see their way to a firm consistent
and effective policy Leeds Mercury
