About 1030 last night the alarm of
fire was given Frank CunhVs general
store Nuuanu street next building to
the corner of Hotel street was burning
briskly inside on the two floors with
tliCflamcs bursting out in front It is
a two story wooden building between

on thc corner and Geo McLeans drug
and oil store of brick and cement En
gine Co No 4s volunteer boys were
thc first to lay hose but no water plug
could be found nt thc comer There
was a long delay before the engines
sent water from hydrants in different
directions from thc spot but when
thc streams came tiiey were strong
and soon availed to put the fire under
control Thc flames evidently bid
much headway before discovery being
kept in above by thc iron roof When
thc firemen entered both stories were
all ablare although the floor of the
second one was not burned through
Mrs Perry is owner of thc building
which is evidently damaged beyond re
pair under thc fire limit law Before
water was obtained the Hook Lad
der Company did good sen ice in tear
ing away thc wooden awning that was
burning fiercely and shedding danger
ous heat nil round Facts regarding
insurance could not be ascertained for

FATAL RESULT 01 THE KIRK
While Deputy Marshal Pahia and
Officer Hopkins were exploring the
building after the firf they found the
dead body of a Portuguese lad of about
sixteen years dressed in trousers and
shirt lying face down in a bedroom
deluged with water His hands were
scorched but otherwise he was not
burned Neither was the room much
damaged It is apparent that when
thc flames reached the boys bed
clothes they came in contact witli his
hands causing hi in to spring out on
thc floor and there die of suffocation
The body was removed to the Station
