Art Collection On Indian Medical Care Given Arrow Washington, D.C.—George R. Cain, Chairman of the Board and President of Abbott Laboratories, recently presented a collection of 36 documentary paintings on Indian medical care to Arrow, Inc., a non-profit organization for the ad vancement of the American Indian. The presentation was made at a luncheon held in Washington, D.C. at the Skyline Inn. Accepting the paintings on be half of Arrow was Rep. Benßeifel, (R) S.D. Rep. Reifel, Vice-Presi dent of Arrow, is a Sioux Indian and c graduate of Harvard Univer sity. Rep. Reifel commended Abbott for its contribution of a pictorial record on Indian culture. “It is refreshing to note that a pharmaceutical company such as Abbott is not only in the business of developing medicine for saving lives, but through its program of fine art also enriches our lives," he said. "Paintings such as these will go a long way toward developing a better understanding of the Ameri can Indian and his problems," he added, "and we are highly honored to be made the permanent custo dians of this valuable and unique collection." In attendance at the luncheon were Cabinet Members, Congres sional Representatives from states where the paintings were created and various Tribal Leaders, as well as government officials on Indian Affairs. Valued at $50,000, the collection is the work of four leading Ameri can artists who were commis sioned by' Abbott in 1949. The artists were Edward Mill man, Frede Vidar, Edward Chavez and Fletcher Martin, all of whom are represented in such galleries as the Metropolitan Museum, The National Museum of Denmark, The Museum of Modern Art, The Na tional Gallery and many others. The paintings were originally used to illustrate two articles on Indian medical care in What's New, a publication of Abbott Labora tories distributed to physicians NOTICE ! After publication, the paintings were as sembled into a traveling art collec tion and exhibited for six years in leading art galleries and museums throughout the United States. Abbott intended the paintings to be a pictorial documentary to help achieve a better and more realistic understanding of the problems of Indian medical care—and of the people who must cope with their problems. The artists spent several months traveling more than 20,000 miles, from the Mexican border to 200 miles below the Arctic Circle, to document the medical care and related health conditions of various American Indian tribes. They visited 13 reservations in the United States and representative Indian and Eskimo villages in Alaska. The paintings will be placed on exhibition in the American Indian Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. Following the Fair they will be hung permanently in Wash ington, D.C. Congressman Ben Reifel (S.D.) Vice President of Arrow, Inc. ac cepted the paintings with the fol lowing remarks. "It is with both extreme pleas ure and profound gratitude that I accept, on behalf of ARROW this striking collection of paintings. It is refreshing to note that a phar maceutical company such as Abbott is not only in the business of devel oping medicine for saving lives, but through its program of fine art, also enriches our lives. "The results represent not only a significant contribution totheart world, but also to the enhancement of a better understanding of the American Indian in general and his health and medical problems in particular. "In fact, it was the development of a more realistic understanding which the people of Abbott were (Continued on Page 5) BIA Encourages Volunteer Services With Peace Corps According to an official of the Navajo Agency, the Bureau of Indian Affairs encourages its em ployees to volunteer for the Peace Corps program. Bureau employees may be granted up to two years leave without pay to accept assign ment with the Peace Corps. 1 hey will be guaranteed reinstatement to their former or a similar job on return to active dut>. The Peace Corps lias need for mechanics, construction workers, farmers, surveyors, people with experience and training in special fields, people with practical skill and among these, for people show ing aptitude to use or learn a foreign language. The need for teachers exists in all subjects and on all levels: nur sery, elementary, junior and senior high, college and university, adult and teacher education. Teachers who are specialists in science and mathematics are al ways in demand. There is constant need for teachers of home economics, industrial arts and arts and crafts, as well as in many other fields. In addition, volunteers skilled in community development are needed, as well as physical educa tion teachers and group leaders who can work with children on organized games, people who know how to organize games, people who know how to organize coopera tives and who have cooperative credit and marketing experience, and people who canteachcommer cial subjects along introductory lines.
