FROM ARK ‘SOBER’
HANGO, Finland, Jan. 10.—The 240

They left Hango yesterday on a spe

party was expected to cross'the Finnish-
Russian border either late Sunday or
early Monday. Their ultimate destina
tion is Petrograd.
The sun was just setting when the
train tarrying the former American rad
icals steamed out of Hango. The reds
appeared unusually sober.
“I start for Russia with mingled emo
tions,” Emma Goldman said, just be
fore the train departed. VOf fourse, I
want to see wbat Is ahead but I Jeare
much that is dear behind. I send my
regards and love to all in America, both
enemies and friends.”

It was put aboard the train, revealed

SAYS DEPORTEES
ARE HELP TO RUSS
BERLIN, Jan. 19.—Russia welcomes
the return of bolshevik sympathizers de
ported from the United States, for Rus
sia requires either German or American
help for construction, declared Carl
Radek, former of the propaganda
section of the soviety government and
formerly Lenine's main lieutenant In Ger
many, today.
Radek has been deported from Ger
many, being sent out of the country by
way of Poland, but he gave a long and
important interview, setting forth his
impressions before he left.
A report has been received from the
United States that Ludwig Martens, the
so-called “soviet ambassador,” was about
to be deported.
“So they may deport Martens and keep
George Bakhmeteff, the minister of a
nonexistent Russian government," he
commented. “Bakhmeteff is living upon
money from unfilled Russian war con
tracts.
“IVe would be glad if Martens re
turned. He is an engineer of the highest
technical ability and such are needed for
the rebuilding'of Russia. We can use
all that the United States has depbrted.
Their education and experience in Amer
ica will be valuable to our government.
But you Americans should have put your
Statue of Liberty on hoard the deporta
tion ship, sending it to Moscow along
with the bolsheviki.”
Radek then went into a long political
dissertation declaring that the United
States is not free, but is autocratic,
whereas Russia is the new land of free
dom.
