BOARD PASSES BOND ISSUE TO - BUYH.S. SITE Votes Expenditure Up to $90,000 for North Side Building Plat. WON’T CURTAIL WORK Th" school city of Indianapolis will | ■ell $90,000 of bonds in the near future with which to purchase a site for the oft-proposed north side high school If the state tax board gives its approval. The bond issue was authorized by the board of school commissioners last night. Mrs. Julia 1?. Tutewiler, doubting the wisdom of spending $90,000 for land so” anew high school, asked why this im provement was being . singled out when money is so badly needed to improve schools already built. The new school may be located on • property owned by the Todd estate, hav ing a 600-foot frontage on Thirty-fourth street and 300 feet on both North Me ridian street and Pennsylvania "street. This location seems to be favored by the board members. An attempt was made several months ago to obtain an option on this property for a purchase price of $90,000, but. the owners refused to sell for that price. Several other sites have been investigated by the board. The board has indicated it will make another attempt to purchase the Todd site for $90,000 or less, and if this fails con demnation proceedings may be brought. OBJECTIONS OF TWO MEMBERS OVERRULED. • Herbert Foltz, former president of the hoard, said $90,000 seemed an exorbitant price to pay for the high school site. Mrs. Tutewiler was of the same opinion and voiced her objection to pushing this pur chase over other improvements. Other members of the board denied that the purchase would interfere with other building plans. One member said it would be a matter of policy to buy the site as the state board of tax commission ers is known to favor a north side high school. “Aren't we catering too much to the tax board and not enough to the public?’’ asked .Mrs. Tutewiler “We need money for the Technical school, Manual High school and for grade schools. I do not see why it should be necessary to make this land purchase now.’’ The board finally approved the resolu tion on the ground that there may be a decided increase in property value on the north side.
