A burglar was arrested and two pockeH
books found In his possession were taken'*
to their owners to be identified early to
day before the owners of the purses knew
they had been robbed.
John Garvin. IS, negro, 1112 Myron
street, arrested by Lieut. Woollen and*
Sergt. Marren, Is charged with burglary^
Mrs. H. J. Reedy, 926 College avenuej
saw the shadovyy form of a hand against
the window of her bathroom at 1:20
morning and an Instant later a dark face*
was pressed against the window.
She called police headquarters and
Sergt. Winkler and a squad were sent to
the house.
Lieut. Woollen and Sergt. Marren;
learned that the emergency automobile'
had been sent to their district and!
started for the house, when they saw a
negro at Eleventh street and Broadway,
halted him and searched him.
They found two women's purses, one
empty and the other containing more
than $2, and also discovered the man’#
shoes were laced only half way up and
that his socks were muddy.
Garvin confessed having stolen the two
purses and showed the police where they
had been stolen.
The purse in which there was no money
was stolen from the home of William
Taylor. 705 East Pratt street, and the*
other purse from the home of Lee Paying
93* Stillwell street.
A burglar almost carried away all of
Jacob Gilbert's clothing store at 637 East
Washington street early today.
Sergt. Chitwood found the thief had
broken In a rear window, and Gilbert
said thirty-five suits of clothes, three
raincoats and a leather coat had been
stolen.
The clothing was at more than
SI,OOO.
The robbery was discovered at 6:45 thla
morning.

COLORED RACE
State-wide organization of the negro
population of Indiana to further the
interests of the colored race is the ob
ject of the first convention of Indiana
colored people In session today at the
Bethel A. M. E. church.
The committee on organization. In Its
report, emphasized the desirability of
organized efforts upon the part of negroes
in Indiana to better themselves.
The platform of the convention includ
ed demands for “one hundred per cent
Americanism among negroes of Indiana,
racial advancement, political equality
and educational equality.'*
George P Stewart of Indianapolis was
elected president of the new organiza
tion. Other officers chosen were: Vice
president. Rev. W. W. Williams of Ev
ansville: secretary, Fred M. Moore of
Indianapolis; treasurer, Lucas Willis, In
dianapolis. sergeant-at-arms, Gordoi
Donaldson, Indianapolis; chaplain, Rev.
F. F. Young, Gary.
Rev. C. M. C. Hammond of Evansville,
one of the speakers, explained that it
was not social equality that the negr*
wants.
"We don't want to marry Into th#
white race—l believe the black race is
the be*, in the world—but we want to
realize that racial prejudice is all
wrong." he declared. jg

iticians were very prominent
Gordon Donaldson, well-known repub
lican politician, welcomed all incoming
delegates.
