CARRANZA DEFIES
REVOLUTIONISTS
Calls for Public Support and
Says He’ll Delay Voting.
MEXICO CITT. Via Galveston, May 6.
—Absolute refusal to give up the gov
ernment of Mexico to his enemies was
announced today by President Carranza.
In a manifesto addressed to the peo
ple, he called for support of his gov
ernment.
Because of the revolutions throughout
the country, he said, the national elec
tions, at which his successor would be
chosen, would not be held July 4.
“The revolts of Gen. Obregon and Gen.
Gonzalee are nothing but military plots,”
said the proclamation, “and In view of
the attitude of those former candidates,
;it is now almost Impossible to bold
; presidential elections as ordered by the
Mexican constitution.”
The proclamation reviewed at length
the Mexican situation since 1917, lead
ing up to and admitting the present re
volts In Guerrero, Sonora, Michoacan,
Puebla, Zacatecas, Tabasco and various
other states.
REBELS EXPECTING

6.—Fall of Mazatlan, Important west
coast city, was hourly expected by revo
lutionists here today.

EL PASO, May 6.—Plans are being
rapidly formulated today for the advance
of the rebel army of 20.000 or more men
southward on Mexico City from Junyez,
with the object of overthrowing Presi
dent Carranza.
Pancho Villa, bandit leader, who sev
eral days ago declared he would not anp
port the revolution because It Is backed
by Gen. Obregon, apparently haa under
gone a change of heart, for word was re
ceived here today that he has Joined the
rebels with bis force of 2,000 men.

WASHINGTON. May 6.—Torreon. one
of the most important rides of Mexico,
and a strategic point, haa revolted and
Is In the hands of the Mexican rebels, ac
cording to advices to the agency of the
Sonora revolution here today.
Carranza's back Is to the wall, accord
ing to afldentlal advice* from various
eourcea.
Representatives of the Obregon revolu
tion predict he will be overthrown In a
week.
United States officials explained their
reports were “fragmentary” and largely
“rumors,” but the fact that it was deemed
necessary to dispatch a division of
destroyers to Key West, there to await
orders, was taken to mean this govern
ment knows the situation is serious.
