4 NEW SHORTAGE, IT’S CADETS FOR NAVAL ACADEMY Apathy Toward Affairs Mili tary Lessens Number of Applicants. DESIRE A CLASS OF 800 ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 22.—The na val academy Is by no means untouched .by the general apathy toward things military which is noted by those inter ested In every.branch of the service. It has had a marked effect toward lessening the inclination of young men to enter the Institution, ‘ and unusual means are being taken to bring the new class np to the point, 800 or 900. wblcn ic,desired in order to bring the whole student body to the number of 2.40 C, for which the Institution is equipped in ev ery particular. In addition to the regular mental ex aminations for entrance, a special ex amination is being held today at tbo various points where civil service testa are given. The physical examinations of those who have passed their mental tests dur ing the February and April examina tions are now going on at the academy. The nucleus of the new class was formed by the readmlsslon of thlrty- Sve youths who had been members of the previous class, but bad difficulty with their studies and resigned. They will be given another stance, and were admitted lu time to go on the practice cruise with the other mid shipmen. The remainder of the new fourth class will be broken into the academy routine by the time the r.ew academic year opens. Oct. 1. . BELIEVE METHOD NOT ISDEBSTOOD. About seventy-five enlisted men of proper age and other necessary require ments passed the examinations for ad mission as midshipmen. One hundred are -authorized each year by a law which has been in effect four years, and this is the largest number which hat ever been admitted into one class. It is believed that when it becomes more thoroughly known that youths may enter the Naval academy by this method, and that they haTe the same opportunities of advancement as those who enter by appointment from civil ian life, there will be no difficulty in getting the full quota each year. The year of service as enlisted men has been found to be of distinct benefit when the academy Is entered. One hundred and seventeen youths passed the mental test for admission in February, and 402 In April, or 517 in all. These have begun their physical ex aminations, and the exagzinations will be continued at the rate of about twenty five a day. As the candidates haTe all been warned to submit themselves to an unofficial ex amination before they come to Annapolis, it is believed that the percentage of fail ures will be less than ten. The total membership of the new fourth class as a result of the read missirfn of former members, those en tering from the February and April ex aminations and the enlisted men of the navy and marine corps, should reach about 575. It is the wish of the navy department that the membership should not fall be low 800, hence the special examination which has been ordered for today. HOPE TO GAIN ADDITIONAL 235. It is hoped no less than 225 will be admitted through it. Changes which have been directed by the navy departmens will result In gTeat convenience to those youths admitted to the naval academy In the future. These changes affect both the mental and physical teat 6. As to the former it has been provided that the certificates of approved schools and colleges- will be acepted in place TORTURED 9 YEARS BY ECZEMA. It has been provided also that candi dates passing the mental examinations will not be compelled to come to An napolis for physical examinations, but may take these examinations before boards of naval surgeffns at various points throughout the country. The status of the academy in regard to class routine has resumed the con dition as it existed prior to the war except for the fact that the present first class, which will graduate next June, represents only half of the membership as it entered during the summer of 1917. The other half constituted the class which has Just been graduated, the third claes of the previous year having been equally divided, on a scholastic basis, to supply a first and second class. The lat ter class was omitted In order to shorten the course to three years during the war. After the graduation of the next class, in June, 1921, the old order will be re stored, with four classes of the normal size and four yearß’ work leading to graduation. Movie to Decide Race Finishes in Germany BERLIN, June 22.—The Union club and the Berlin Racing union have adopted the system of photographing race finishes as absolate proof of the accuracy of the final decision. Whenever any dispute arises as to a close finish, the picture taken by especial ly rapid apparatus Is held as proof of which horse actually won. Incidentally, Germany is devekplnng the film business in many respects and often for commercial purposes. One of the latest achievements of the film industry is that of “detective.” In connection with apprehension of the Hoelz bandits, who terrorized the Vogt land district this spring, the'police took a news film as proof of participation of a number of individuals in Hbeiz’s band. This little pig had roast beef, This little pig had none. This little pig cried, ‘Wee-wef-wee! I can’t find my way home!’” “That’s Mother,” replied the little Pig, In answer to an Inquiring look from Puss Junior, “she always sings that when any one of us is naughty. She had on a blue gingham apron and a very tight-fitting shirtwiast, which was stretched almost to the bursting point as she raised her right forefoot to shade her eyes. “Well, here you are at last,” she ex claimed, “but look at your trousers?” Toggle looked ruefully at the rent in his little blue pants. “I got stuck in the fence,” he whimpered. “What is your name?” asked Mrs. Porker, turning to Puss. “Puss in Boots Junior, madam.” “This is Wiggle and this is Tiggie,” said Mrs. Porker, two small pigs got up and shook hands with Puss. After that they all had a merry lunch, and Puss was surprised to see how clean and well behaved the Porker family were. “You know,” said Mrs, Porker, as if rending his thoughts, “that Pigs are jeally the cleanest of animals, only' by shutting them In small pens they have been made to appear just the opposite. Yes,” she continued, “when pigs are al lowed to run around they are as clean as they can be. Only when they are little they are often very disobedient,” and she looked at Flgglo, who got very red In tho face. "I don’t believe he’ll disobey again,” answered Puss Junior. “You have such a nice playground here ]n tho woods, I shouldn’t think Ae would want to run away to that dusty road.
