HARDING TAKES
UP LEAGUE ISSUE
Nominee Breaks Silence to
Discuss Stand.
MARION, 0., July 14.—A1l conference*
asked by party leaders with Nominee
Warren G. Harding are being postponed
while the senator prepares his speech of
acceptance.
None of the national leaders is ex
pected In Marion now until the notifica
tion ceremonies, July 22.
Thus far the senator has not denied
himself to any one, although the steady
stream of visitors has delayed greatly
the completion of the speech of accept
ance, wnich is not likely to be ready
now before early next week.
The senator broke his announced pur
pose not to talk issues until after his
official notification by isssulng yesterday
a statement concerning the intention of
Cox and Roosevelt to make the league of
nations the paramount issue in their
campaign.
“We gladly accept the challenge," said
the senator.
“We are more than willing to make the
election a national referendum on the
question whether we shall have four
years more of democratic readiness to
surrender this republic.”
"President Wilson has forced accepl
p&nce by the democratic candidates of his
paramount issue,” said the senator, "al
though the party machinery has been
taken over by the Tammanies of New
York, New Jersey and Indiana.
“The president is concerned only with
the vindication of his foreign policy by
his party and if possible, by the country,”
he continued.
“With the democratic party harnessed
to the ratification of the league without
protection to American interests, the
league would be ratified should the demo
crats win.” the senator asserted, “and
America would become at once a party
to the twenty-odd wars now going on in
the world.
“America would have to contrlbue its
army and navy.”
BARBERS FORM
NEW WAGE BASIS
Will Ask $23 Weekly Guaran
tee and Ten-Hour Day.
Demands for increased wages and
shorter hours were formulated at a meet
ing last night of the union barbers of
the city.
They will ask the boss barbers for a
guarantee of $25 a week and 60 per cent
of all the business in excess of $35 a
week as compared with the SIS a week
guarantee and 60 per cent of all business
in excess of S2S a week in effect at the
present time.
They will demand a ten-hour work day
•instead of the eleven and one-half-hour
day of the present and a thirteen-hour
Saturday instead of the fourteen and
one-half hours that they work at the
present time.
The present agreement between the
barbers and the boss oarbers expires on
July 22, and the demands formulated at
the meeting will then be pressed.
Already some of the downtown shops
are charging 25 cents for a shave and
50 cents for a hair cut, but boss barbers
say If the new demands of the barbers
are met it will mean a 35-cent shave and
a 65-cent harir cut.
A SLIP-rP LADDER.
Anew ladder has no rounds, only two
steps, one for each foot, which slip up
and down in slots along the sides of the
ladder. Ascent is made by drawing one
foot after the other. Ratchets hold the
steps in whatever position they are
pressed.

A maiden in love for centuries has
pulled the petals of a flower one by one
as she murmured, “He loves me, he loves
me not."
That is not the way Mile. Olga Celeste

scratches and scars of former deep claw
wounds on her arms.
“Ah, they love me so,” she said. “An
animal has to make himself felt before
you are sure that he loves you.”

ing to a cage on the back stage of the

Sappho greeted me with a nasty growl
and a sharp paw darted from between
the bars of the cage.
Not being accustomed to such greet
ings, 1 stopped a safe and respectable
distance from the cage, but Mile. Olga
put l\er band through the cage and In
stantly Sappho was all “smiles,” the
growl changed into “purring” as the big
leopard rolled contentedly about as the
trainer patted Sappho.
“She is so sweet," said the famous ani
mal trainer. “See how she purrs.”
It might be purring, but to my un
trained'ear that “sweet purring” sounded

It Is remarkable the effect that Mile.
Olga has on her five pets—Sappho, Tiny,
Queenie, Olga and Kelly.
From another cage came a sharp, cruel
and altogether uninviting growl.
It was Kelly, a huge ieopard, who was
weaving back and forth behind his prison
bars.
“That's Kelly,” said the trainer. “He>
true Irish, fighting all the time.”
These leopards have all acted before
the Selig camera and appeared In the
serial, “The Adventures of Kathleen,”
Mile. Olga explained.
The trainer herself in the Jungle scenes
has often “doubled” In the movies for

“My ‘cats’ are Just like school chil
dren,” she said. “They are very Jealous
and when they have quarrels they come
to me In the, big cage and I act as a
sort of a peace conference and sometimss
those conferences remind one more of a
battlefield.”

the confidence of a leopard, and when
that Is done things are more or less
easy.
“We first teach the leopard to take his
seat and then the task Is to make him
leave that seat on the spoken command,

Olga.
“If I use the whip I surely would hs
torn to pieces,” she said as she em
braced Queenie. “See, Queenie is very
jealous of you. The Jealousy of my pots

To verify her statement, Mile. Olga
exhibited a number of ugly scars on her
arms caused by her pets.
