A group of antique china lent to the John Herron Art institute by Mrs J. H. Weaver of Greencastle. Ind., forms an Interesting exhibition which will be dis played during the remainder of the sum mer. William Dudley Foulke's collection of paintings by old masters and George C. Calvert’s group of American artists works will also continue on display. The Persian and Oriental paintings, be longing to Mrs. Chauncey Blair of New Tork city, which have drawn many visi tors during the past week, will be in the institute until fall. In Mrs. Weaver's collection there are Six pieces of ancient Austrian china. The delicate “Five Steeples" plates and pitchers are valuable, because the art of making them has been lost long ago. OLD VIENNA CHINA LIKE MODERN WARE. Six pieces of old Vienna china, made way back in the fifteenth century, seem very like the hand-painted china we find in modern homes. Two pieces, supposed to have been used in the Austrian foot-washing ceremony, are very interesting. A chest containing an old-fashioned claret set is another antique article in the collection. v . It comes from France, being made with French inlay of mother-of-pearl. Another miniature chest containing a tea service is of Chinese origin. Tiny Chinere figures are inlaid on both the chest and the tea set. There are a number of pictures in William .Dudlev Foulke’s collection of old masters which deserve a second visit. “The Picture Book,’’ by Jaslnsky, a Polish artist, who exhibited a number of Important pictures at the Columbus exposition in Chicago in 189S, is perhaps the most striking picture in the entire collection. A little girl, with big. brown eyes that speak, is falling asleep over a pic ture book. Her curly hair is tousled, and her doll has been pushed aside on the table. The attitude and the choice of color ing by the artist pring out the childish characteristics most effectively. A llfeslze portrait of St. Francis of Assisi, attributed to Zurburan. but prob ably the work of a Spanish artist of an earlier date, holds the attention of the visitor. It ia a strongly marked face over which gloomy shadows play. The dark, somber colors emphasize the portrayal of the friar of the dark ages. A long austere robe drops from his shoulders to his feet; in one hand he carries a cross and in the other a book. His bare feet gleam on the stone floor. Showing the nails which have been placed through them. “The Lofoden Islands.” the work of an unknown Danish artist, makes an In teresting study in gray tones. The feature which saves the picture from monotony is the pink topping of the cliffs. The artist has been very skillful in making his objests stand out plainly with hardly perceptible differences in color. "Madonna and Child With St. Eliza beth and John the Baptist.” painted by an artist of the school of Carracci, is a very interesting picture. Mr. Foulke purchased the picture in an old junk shop in 1890. He found that the picture had been - • Midsummer Reduction Sale of Table Lamps 20% ‘ DISCOUNT on our entire stock of table lamps, including such well known makes as Handel, Cassady, Rainaud, etc. Our stock is new and complete, giving you a large variety to choose from. BELONGS TO SCHOOL OF CARRACCI. He identified it as belonging to the school of Carracci, fromv the texture of the original canvass. The picture is an adaptation of one of Titian’s works now in the Pitti gallery in Florence. In the Florentine picture the figure of St. John is on the other side, but the virgin's face and the child are much the same in all. The colors, although naturally dull, are much dimmed and in some places the figures have become almost obliter ated. “The Turgler and His Sehatz," paint ed by Hugo Kaufmann, a Munich artist. Is an interesting little picture, which shows a marked regard for color and detail. Another picture by Kaufmann is called the “Bavarian Girl,” and shows the same delicacy for mingling colors of varying shades. The “Portrait of a Lady,” apparently of the Elizabethan period, shows a strongly marked face with a striking contrast in the waist. “Rebecca at the Well,” which is a copy by a French artist of Murillo’s painting in the Prado gallery. It is pronounced a remarkably accu rate copy by authorities, although re duced in size. The colors are well blended, and offer an interesting study in faces.
