RECRUITERS WILL HELP ENTERTAIN Plans for G. A. R. Encamp ment Progress Rapidly. Mmbers of the United States army re cruiting detachment of Indiana will be escorts of honor to the veterans of the civil war who will come to Indianapolis ■when the national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic is held here Sept. 19 to 25. The services of the recruiting detach ment have been offered the executive committee in charge of general arrange ments in a letter from Maj. W. F. Uar rell, in charge of the local station. Maj. Harrell, in a letter to 'Wallace O. Lee, chairman of the committee on in formation, states that the entire detach ment in the state “will regard it as a privilege” to assist in the reception and entertainment of the members of the G. A. R. “Please rail upon me for any ma terial or property which you may need and which the army can furnish,” he says. Plans for the handling of the encamp ment are rapidly progressing and the lo cal organization will be completed in sev eral days. It is believed that a* least 100,000 per sons will come to Indianapolis for the encampment, and thousands of rooms wiis be needed in private homes. Court Makes Woman First to Lose Rights Special to The Times. GARY, Ind., July 31.—Disfranchise ment for ten years was included in tbo sentence imposed on Mrs. Cheney Thorn ton by Judge Martin Smith of criminal court at Crown Point Friday, making the first time such a sentence has been passed on a woman in Indiana. Mrs. Thornton goes to the woman’s prison at Indianapolis for from two to fourteen years on a charge of being an accessory in a robbery case. She is the wife of Will Thornton, who will be electrocuted at Michigan City prison Nov. 12. Claim Child Is Held for Payment of Debt Special to The Times. SOUTH BEND, Ind., July 31.—Henry Paege and wife have asked Judge C. R. Montgomery of the Superior court to issue a writ of habeas corpus compelling Mr. and Ms. Louis Kolskls to surrender to them their child. The writ is returnable next Wednes day. It is claimed by the plaintffs that the defendants are unlawfully holding the child because of an alleged debt which the father owes to Kolskis. It is charged the latter refuses to give up the child until the debt is canceled. Junior C. C. Plans for Band Concert in Fall In accordance with action taken by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the United States Military band will be brought to Indianapolis in October by the junior chamber. Reports from the membership commit tees of the junior chamber show that 138 of the 500 new members sought by Sept. 4, have been obtained during the week. GRAIN DROP JOLTS FARMERS. NOBLESVILLE, Ind.. July 31.—Farm ers of Hamilton and adjoining counties were in a panic Friday when wheat took a drop of 15 cents a bushel and was quoted at the local elevators at from $2.25 to $2.19. a drop of 40 cents within a week. The decline in price and the car shortage means eventually a still lower price, elevator men say. Most of the country elevators are filled to their ca pacity. Two Women Injured in Jump From Car Two women were injured by jumping | from street cars at South and Meridian streets last night, when they saw two j street cars about to collide. Mary Porter, 29, Virginia avenue, and Altha Porter, 22, 539 Hosbrook street, were both bruised. Alford Wilkins, 118 North Senate ave nue. motorman on the Shelby street car. said the controller of his car failed to j work and that the car started to go backward. It crashed into a Prospect street car at Meridian street. .Tust before the collision some person opened the rear door of the car and yelled “jump.” The two women jumped from the car and were injured. “But all ,this was before Mr. Justice began taking Trutona.
