Massachusetts Will Be Riddled

PENSACOLA, Fla., Aug. 17.—1 t was
announced here today that the battleship
Massachusetts will be brought here and
used as a target for big guns of the
island forts and also guns on railway
cars, known as “mobile batteries."
Army forces will also be brought here
for observation purposes and airplanes
will assist in ending tba existence of the
old naval ship, bombing from the air.
These maneuvers will take place in Oc
tober, but army engineers are here today
arranging a location for the target.
After being battered the Massachusetts
will be towed to deep water and sunk.

But Not Women.
NEW YORK, Ang. 17.—1f the clothing
profiteer is ever swatted, hubby will
deserve the credit.
Ke *is doing the most of the old
clothes wearing for the family in an ef
fort to puncture the high prices, while
friend wife continues to puncture the
family bank roll by dolling up in new
duds, according to wholesalers and
manufacturers here.
They say retail buyers can lay In
large stocks of women's wear for the
fall and winter without fear that pres
ent prices_will drop.
The prevailing high prices will con
tinue, they say, and the women will buy
as usual.
They register gloom while talking
about the prospects of the men’s market.
Discussing employment conditions A.
Baroff. secretary of the International
Ladies' Garment Makers’ Union, said:
“The situation In our trade is not so
serious as in the men’s.
“The buyers are timid about placing
ord°r3 for fear prices will drop, but
things are improving and present in
dications are that they will continue to
improve.
“The agitation to wear old clothes has
been more effective among men than
women.
“It’s chiefly the men who are carrying
on the strike against high prices.
“■When there are new clothes to be
purchased the man of the family wears
last year’s suit and lets the wife buy
new duds.
“You’ll find even 'rich men wearing
their old clothes as a protest against the
high prices, but no woman will do that
If she has the money to spend.”
The new fall and winter styles in
women’s clothes show no economizing in
sloth.
Paris will set the fashion, as usual,
say the dealers, and the last word from
our best Parisian shops is that more ma
terial than ever will be used.
The woman with the long slim lines
will continue to have the best of it, but
her fall and winter gowns will have
draperies and tunics to show that econ
omy is not to bo thought of when fash
ion says otherwise.
The most fashionable material will be
duvetyn, which costs something like
a yard.
French shoes will be the vogue—they
have short vamps and are most chic.
You can buy a simple pair for $25.
In one Fifth avenue shop you can get
them as high as SIOO per pair.
And it's a shop that does a brisk busi
ness.
$200,000 RAILROAD
BONDS STOLEN
In Transit From Milwaukee to
Chicago—ss,ooo Reward.
CHICAGO. Aug. 17.—An offer of a re
ward of $5,000 by the Pinkerton National
Detective agency for their return brought
to light today the theft of negotiable rail
road bonds, valued at $200,000, while in
transit between Milwaukee and Chicago.
The rail securities vere In eight lots
and were all mortgage bonds with the
September coupons attached.
All were placed in one large package.
The bonds were bought from a Mil
waukee bank by Paine, Webber & Cos., 209
South Lasalle street, and ordered shipped
to the New York offices Os the Arm by
way of Chicago.
They left Milwaukee July 29 and that is
the last that has been heard of them.
A reticent attitude has been assumed
by authorities on the matter and conse
quently a veil of mystery hovers about
the case.
Whether they were sent by express
or mail has not been disclosed.
The robbery is the largest in this part
of the country -lisce the disappearance
of the $250,000- Liberty bonds sent from
Detroit lo the Stndehaker Company in
Indiana, which has been cleared up.
Great Lakes Asked
to Play for G. A. R.
A telegram has been sent to Joseph
Daniels, secretary of the navy, by John
B. Reynolds, general secretary of the In
dianapolis Chamber of Commerce, asking
that permission be granted for the Great
Lakes Naval band to be sent to Indian
apolis during the G. A. R. encampment
September 19 to 25.
Mr. Reynolds has also wired Col. Wil
liam E. Gillmore, in charge of the sir
service in Washington, suggesting that
the air service help in the entertainment
In the Grand Army encampment.
In his wire. Mr. Reynolds has pointed
out that this would not only be a splendid
tribute to the veterans, hut an oppor
tunity to present visible evidences of the
development, of the air service to the
thousands of people who will be visiting
Indianapolis during that week.
“X don't anticipate any trouble at all
in getting the band here and I feel sure
that the air service will be only too glad
to have aviators In Indianapolis during
that week because of the impetus that
will give recruiting.” says Sir. Reynolds.'
Boat Service on Ohio
to Be Restored Soon

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind., Aug. 27
W. E. Roe, general manager of the
Louisville and Cincinnati Packet Com
pany. has made an' announcement that
will he of interest to all Indiana towns
and cities along the Ohio river, to the
effect that, beginning next month, the
fteani“r Qneen City will be placed in the
through passenger and freight trads
from Cincinnati to New Orleans.
This will testore a* service which was
discontinued thirty years ago.
Mr. Roe states that immense quant)
ties of freight Is accumulating at all
points along the river, because the rail
roads have more business than they can
handle. -
Large barges will bo added to handle
a part of the freight.
Local packets are already doing a good
business.

the naval fire control instrument factory
at Dayton 0., Secretary Daniels an

Daniels said he would not decide on
the offer until after Aug. 31 and that

Two Boy Scouts Drown
When Boat Capsizes

river in a boat which capsized.
The bodies have not been recovered.
