SLIDING SCALE
PLAN ASKED OF
GAS COMPANY
(Continued From Page One,)
can produce about 5,000,000 cubic feet of
gas a day.
“Using gas oil as we formerly did at
the rate of about four gallons a 1,000
cubic feet of gas made, this would re
quire 20,000 gallons a day.
"At that rate our supplies will be
equal to fifteen days' requirements. I
have issued orders to our plants that un
der no circumstances shall they use more
than two gallons of oil a 1,000 cubic feet
produced.
"This will not make very good gas.
but it will be better than no gas at all.
"At this rate we may consider that we
have approximately thirty days’ supply
of oil. "
"The stocks on hand can not be in
creased because we have no place to put
any more.
“The shipments of oil after we begin
to use accumulated stocks are not likely
to be as good as the shipments of coal.
Therefore, it would be a tremendous
misfortune to the city of Indianapolis if
any considerable amount of water gas
shall have to be produced before next
winter.
"We did produce more than 1,000,000
cubic feet last week." '
He said that “today coal in transit i?
above our imn ediate requirements. Xevt
week it is likely to he below. - ’
THANKED FOR
SCHOOL GIFT
Chamber of Commerce Man
Writes to Holliday.
A letter has bebn sent to John Hr Hol
liday by John B. Reynolds of the In
dianapolis Chamber of Commerce, ex
pressing the appreciation of the Cham
ber of Commerce and the citizens as a
whole for the gift of $25,000 to the Em
merich Manual Training High school by
Mr. Holliday, announced Friday.
Mr. Reynolds' letter reads as follows:
"For me to attempt to express in words
or In writing my deep sense of apprecia
tion of your most recent public-spirited
action would be utterly futile.
“The people of. Indianapolis have long
since learned to 'look .for such acts of
devotion and public spirit as this dona
tion to Manual Training High school in
memory of your son whose life was given
in the service of his country.
“On Thursday night at the meeting of
the Indianapolis Junior fbamber of
Commerce I had the pleasure of listen
ing to Charles F. Ooffin expounding his
ideas as to what really constitutes a
good citizen.
"It seems as though he chose words
which accurately described you.
“He spoke of the vast difference be
tween a good resident and a good citi
zen. saying that a man could be highly
moral, strictly honest in fact be
filled with all the virtues and still be
nothing more than a good resident, un
less he also gave freely of himself to the
betterment and upbuilding of his city.
"May many years te added to those
good ones which you have lived and
which have been filled with so nvuch
help and benefit to your fellow man."

Fending the appointment of-a successor
to Dr. Thomas C. Howe, who resigned as
president of Butler college to devote his
time to bis business interests, J. W. Put
nam, dean of the college, will act as
president. % •
Because many of the directors of the
c diege are out of the city on vacations,
t.i- hoard has taken no notion on Presi
dent Howe's resignation, hut formal ac
t on is expected at the next quarterly
meeting.
Dr. Howe has been president -of P.ulter
for thirteen years. When he accepted the
presidency in JftOT the enrollment was
only 300, but now it totals more thah
1.000.
For the past three years Dr. Howe
has intended relinquishing the presi
ient’s chair, but was prevailed upon to
remain by the board of directors.
Before leaving for Canada, Ir. Howe
Infinitely decided to resign.
Because of the efforts of Dr. Howe,
Butler college today is said to be on a
firm financial basis with plans definitely
lrawn for a large institution.
