His Baby, He Guessed
A certain person employed on the
fourth floor of the statebouse wiU vouch
for the truth of this story.
It was shortly after Glen YanAuken
became a member of the public service
commission and had just moved his fam
ily to Indianapolis that E. I. Lewis,
chairman of the commission, and Fred
Bates Johnson, commissioner, thought
it #onld be proper to make a call on the
family.
Accordingly, they set out.
Johnson declared he knew where Van-
Auken lived and Lewis relied on his
declaration.
They reached a Residence In a certain
section of the city, walked right Into
tbe*house, hang their hats on the rack
and made themselves at home.
When no one received them Mr. John
son walked through the house and Into
the kitchen, where he found a man and
a baby.
“Well, whose youngster is this?” John
son asked.
“It's mine, of course,” the man re
plied.
Somewhat surprised, Johnson directed
a few more queries to the man and
learned, to his chagrin, that they had
entered the wrong house.
The next day Johnson Inquired as to
the exact location of Mr. VanAuken’s
residence.
LUMBER YARD IS
CALLED MENACE
Property Owners Protest
Against Rebuilding.
A remonstrance against the Issuing of
a building permit for the reconstruction
of the lumber yard of the Capitol Lum
ber Company, at Forty-ninth street and
Winthrop avenue, was filed with the
board of public safety yesterday by a
committee representing approximately 150
property owners in the neighborhood.
The lumber yard was set on fire by
sparks from a locomotive on the Monon
railroad, which runs close to it, and a
number of houses In tho district burned
down or were threatened with fire as a
result.
The property owners, with George O.
Lehman, attorney, for spokesman, con
tended that the yard, being in tbe midst
of a residential district, constituted a
menace to public health and safety and
should not be permitted to be rebuilt for
this reason.
A. L. Taggart, president of the board,
stated that there is some doubt If the
board has the power to deny the lumber
company a building permit.
He added, however, that as soon as ap
plication is made for s.tch a permit the
property owners will be notified and
given a hearing.
Several Important promotions were
made In the fire department, the princi
pal advancement being that of Capt. John
J. O'Brien of truck company No. 1 to the
rank of battalion chief.
The new battalion chief replaces John
W. Klpley, who was retired on the pen
sion list several days ago.
Ltent. Thomas J. Duncan of pumper
company, No. B, was promoted to fill
O’Brien's captaincy, and Private Michael
J. Mulvlhin of truck company No. 13,
wa* advanced to lieutenant.

Years U. S. Service
JUNCTION CITY, Kan.. Sept. B.—After
fifty-one years In the government service,
thirty years of which was with the army,
and twenty-one years in the civil serv
ice, James Lehane of this city was re
tired.
Lehane enlisted fifty-one years ago, and
was retired with the rank of sergeant,
by which title he is known.
He then entered the civil service and
has teen with the army clerical work.
He retired on account of age.

way commission, W. W. Southard, chief
of the bureau of platffi, surveys and esti
mates department, and John M. KlmmeL,
chief of the county aid bureau some time
ago, was a well-laid plan to Install
friends of L. H. Wright, director of the
commission, in the department, was In
dicated yesterday, when it was learned
that a formey* employe of the Portland
Cement association will succeed Mir.

The three men were dismissed by the
highway commission, on an "economy”
program, about eight months after Di
rector Wright’s salary had been increased
(2,000 per year, and It was announced at
that time that successors to the three men
would be appointed at the next meeting
of the commission, which was held
Tuesday, Aug. 24.
Pending the appointment of successors
to the dismissed officials, it was an
nounced that C. Gray, a former employs
of the Portland Cement association,
would carry on the work of the chief
engineer, and that G. R. Carr, a former
assistant to Mr. Southard, would assume
the duties of chief of the bureau of plans,
surveys and estimates.
At tbe meeting of the commission on
Aug. 24, no successors were named to
the three men, contrary to the state
ments of Director Wright.
Now it is stated by Mr. Wright that
Mr. Gray and Mr. Carr will be retained
in thilr respective present positions and
