So diligently has New York protected Its game that there Is even good shoot ing within the city limits. Small game Is fairly abundant on parts of Staten Island, and the rabbit hunters also find good sport in Flushing and Jamaica, while Jamaica Bay for the last years has been really full of ducks. Barren Island, where the city dumps its dead horses, is a good place for shorebird shooting, and can be reached frm most parts of the city by the ex penditure of a dime. Os course, various police regulations restrict the shooting in these urban district, but they none-the-less furnish New Yorkers with sport every year. If you can afford more than a car ticket and as much as a whole day of time you can get much better sport by going from twenty to forty miles into the country. Long Island, despite its large popula tion, contains a variety of wild country, and Is one of the best natural game and fish regions In the world. You can find almost any sort of sport you want on Long Island, from digging clams and catching crabs to hunting foxes with hounds. There are deer on the Island, too, and they are on the Increase, but deer hunt ing la not allowed, chiefly because of the danger of shooting high-powered rifles so near civilization. Grouse, quail, woodcock and ring-neck pheasants, rabbits and squirrels make up the attractive list of small game. The pheasants especially are on the In crease, many of them being raised every year on a State game farm and liberated, while eggs and young birds will be turned over to any one who is willing to help in this work of stocking the coverts. Long Island furnishes a surprising variety of fishing, too, all kinds of salt water fish Inhabiting Its coastal waters, while its streams and lakes contain trout, bass and pickerel. I’OOR MAX HAS ACCESS TO ALL. You would expect that all of the best hunting and fishing on Long Island would be owned by private Individuals and preserves, and that the poor man would be shut out from the outdoor life as he 1s in so many regions where the land Is not controlled by the Forest Service or some other public agency. The Forest, Fish and Game Commis sion here says that this Is not the case. Most of the lands of the island are farm lands. The law requires that If the farmer wants to keep out hunters he must pest his lands with a sign at least a foot square every forty rods. Most of the lauds, It Is said, ars not posted. Tho hunters have learned that It Is not good manners to break fences and shoot cows, and most of the farmers are tolerant of tho sportsmen. There are many stations in good hunt ing country In Long Island where you can get off the train, shoulder your gun and strike out across country without being molested. In the same way, while some of tho bast duck-shooting points are' controlled INDIANA DAILY TIMES, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29,1920. by clubs, there are many other places j where anyone may hire a ducking boat or a sink box and go out In quest of j game. Most of the fresh water fishing and practically all of the salt water fishing j is open to all comers. Indeed, there are probably five anglers j in New York for one hunter. The thing that restricts the number j of hunters going -put from New York is j that very few of the people of Hebrew j descent, who make up such a great part I of the population, care for sport. He has little taste either for killing ! or for wild meat. The Immigrant Italian, on the other j hand, coming from a country where the hunting was poor and where he could not, perhaps, even own a gun, is eager to go afield. Equipped with a cheap single-barrel shotgun he goes out and shoots every thing he sees, Including song birds, A Million Bottles Makes a Million Pints of MENTHO-LAXENE COUGH AND COLD SYRUP Make a pint and keep free from colds and coughs. All druggists. woodpeckers and valuable Insectivorous birds. A large percentage of the violations of the game laws In the vicinity of the great city are of this nature. The system of game protection which has kept game abundant In the vlqinlty of the great city is not one of rigorously restrictive legislation. In many states It is sought to protect game by allowing very short shooting seasons, which are generally not enforced with any success. RIGID LAM'S PROTECT GAME. New York, on the other hand, allows generous open seasons and bag limits, but the laws are rigidly enforced.
