Political observers believe, therefore,
that Harding will Acquiesce in any plan

Whether Senator New and Hays were
consulted by the leaders Is not known,
but It Is thought the Senator will be
agreeable to the arrangement. Hays,
however, presents a different case. Some
of his friends take umbra go at the ides
that he should be asked to forego a
position In the Cabinet for a two-year
term In the Senate and with a hot race
for re election facing him In two rears.
They declare he merits the hlghegf con
sideration at the bands of Harding and
that no strings should be tied to his
award.
LOOKS TO EIGHT

Hys will probably weigh the matter
from a strategical standpoint. If he is
convinced that the path to the White
Honse lies through the Senate he will
accept the leaders’ proposal. If he feels
that the Cabinet U the proper stepping
stone lie probably wiil block the maneu
ver.
The plan Is national In scope, for It
cnlis for Hays to keep the national
ch.tlrmnnshlp while he is a tnouiber of
the Senate. Observers see in thia an
adroit move on the part of the aenatorlal
oligarchy to mntntain control of the Re
publican national organization.
With some of the leaders apparently
“sold'' on the plnn without cons derlug
how the great mass of the party will re
gard the selection of lt.s senatorial rep
resentative, the only dark cloud on the
horizon Is Albert J. Beveridge, former
Senator and noted Progressive leader.
Beveridge is to all intents already a
candidate for the office, and thero Is n
belief that Senator New does not care
to meet him In n race for the nomination.
Hays may be disinclined to fight him
nlso, and this may lead to him accepting
n ‘'sure thing" and leaving Senator New
to face the music.

Coroner Robinson said In city conrt
today he has been tumble to find any
law under which W. O. Houlihan, motor
man on the Cruwfordsville tnterurban
cor that killed two children Oct. 18,
could be held.
Houlihan did not have lights burning
on the Intcrurban at the time the cur
hit the automobile In which the children
were riding, but the coroner declared he
had been unable to find where this was
covered by the law. He said he had eon
suited Hio prosecutor and also had been
unable to find any staute covering the
case.
Dr. Robinson stated the law In re
gard to having lights covered steam rail
road trains and automobiles, but did not
cover lnternrban car.
Houlihan is charged with manslaughter
which chnrge was placed against him
after his enr killed Dan nnd Richard
Suse of Crnwfordsrine, but the hearing
in the case will not be held In city court
until Nov. 29.

“Norm" hit the Indiana line off tackle
and skirted the ends time and again

Barry had taken, went back in to carry
the ball over on the first play of the

A costly Crimson fumble was recovered
by Wynne for Notre Dame on Indiana’s
thirty-three-yard line. A pass, Glpp to
Mohardt, gave Notre Daine thirteen
yards. Then Glpp hit the line for four
yards and Brandy threw a pass to Ed
die Anderson, which put the ball on the
one-yard line. From this point Brandy
pushed It over through center for what
proved to be the winning points.

ture will determine the full extent of
the injury. Although Gipp did not pull
so much spectacular work, he showed a
wonderful lot of grit by playing three
periods with this Injury, it Is poss.ble
he will be kept out of' action for the re
mainder of the season.
Williams, half back for Indiana, re
ceived thri-e broken ribs In the fourth
period. Minton of Indiana was badly
shaken up in the same period and was
carried from the field.
The famous Notre Dame aerial attack
was checked In the first few minutes
of play, with Mathys doing most of the
Indiana snappy defensive work on the
long tosses. This seemed to baffle the
Irish, who have been accustomed to hav
lnfl things in this line pretty much their
own way, and It took them quite a while
to get together again. In the first pe
riod Gipp threw one of the greatest
passes ever witnessed at Washington

five yards to Anderson; but the brilliant

Cross tremboiship campaign in the Lake
division, comprising Indiana, Ohio and
Kentucky, while In Indianapolis today
declared that he confidently- expects the
canvass for members for 1921 to net 199
per cent Increase over 1920. Mr. Dickson
Is making a tour of the territory under
his direction and left at noon for Terre
Haute. Plls headquarters are at Cleve

"I have been in close touch with every
community In the Lake division and have
visited most parts of Ohio and northern
Indiana," said Mr. Dickson. “Everywhere

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Nov. 15.—The per
centage basis of ranking the football
teams of the Big Ten Conference Is not
to Michigan’s liking because that method
would place the Wolverines eighth in
the list. That is, Michigan would out
rank only Purdue and Minnesota by
that method of comparing the teams.
After seeing Coach Yost's machine In
action against Chicago, which aggrega
tion Michigan defeated 14 to 0, there Is
no question In the mind of the writer,
but what the team nt Ann Arbor is equal
to any In the Big Ten Conference. Chi
cago was “on edge" for Its game with
Michigan. There was little to choose In
weight and the teams appeared evenly
matched.
More than 32,000 football fans saw the
old rivals battle on even terms until the
final minutes of the second period. Then
Michigan opened up. Two clever end
runs placed the ball on Chicago’s twenty
yard line and Steketee captured a per
fect pass in the end zone for a touch
down. Tho play of the Michigan team
In those final minutes of the second
period showed the wonderful scoring
power of Yost’s machine.
Open piny coupled with a delayed line
buck, that ended In an end run gave
Michigan Its second chance to score, but
with the bail less than a yard from the
goal line it reguired three drives against
Chicago * forward wall to earrv the hall
over. Again Michigan almost scored when
a blocked punt rolled over the goal and
a Maize and Blue warrior captured the
ball, but an off-side play prevented Mich
igan getting that score.
Coach Yost demonstrated that his team
of huskies could play a wonderful for
ward passing game, r.s well ns drive
through the Chicago line. A play which
without a question was one of the beat
seen on a western gridiron, was used
by Yost. The backs seemed to charge
Into the line as If to buck through the
Chicago forward wall and the next In
stant a speedy athlete carrying the ball
woul.l be seen lashing around tne end.
It seemed as if tht Chicago ends would
never learn to stop this play and it was
that trick that did much to win for
Michigan.
Goetz, left tackle for Michigan, is with
out a question one of the greatest line
men seen on a western gridiron this year.
Pheney, Chicago’s right guard, is cer
tainly In the all-western class. The play
of Banks, quarter, and Steketee, half
hack for Yost s team, was of the sensa
tional order.
Coach Ktagg has taught his men some
clever forward passes, which worked for
big gains, but at critical moments the
Chicago ends fal’ed to hold the ball and
the incompleted pass was costly to the
Maroons.
Michigan has played only three Confer
ence caines, and two of these were lost,
to Illinois and Ohio State, leaders in the
Big Tea race, and the scores of both
were close. Followers of football at Ann
Arbor who have watched Coach Yost's
eleven develop from early in the season,
declare that “Michigan found itself in
the Chicago came and that if Yost's ath
letes hail played as well against Ohio
State and Illinois as they did against
Chicago, that Michigan would be lead
ing the Conference.”

CHICAGO, Nov 15.—The annual cross
country run of the Intercollegiate Con
ference Athletic Association will be held
at Urbaua next Saturday morning, it was
announced by the association here to
day. The following schools have entered
teams: Kansas, lowa, Minnesota, lowa
State. Nebraska, Michigan Aggies and
Mississippi A. & M. College.
Vail Takes Speed Event
PHOENIX, Arir., Nov. 15.—Ira Vail
won the MX*-mite automobile race at the
State fairgrounds here Saturday. Eddie

Stepsons of Missing
Woman Are Arrested
LANGDON, N. H., Nov. 15.—Benjamin
and Chester Doolittle, stepsons of Mrs.
William R. Whitney, who, the authori
ties believe, was killed and hurled on a
farm here, were arrested today. They
were taken to Claremont for grilling by,
Hie chief of police and a detective, who
refused to disclose the charge against
them. Their arrest followed by a few
hours the arrest of their father.
