apartment building ig no easy job for a
man and to tbe general mass of humanity
that regards woman as a bit less practi
cal and a “heap" more helpless than the
male human, It seems almost unnatuura!
for a woman to be capable of efficiently
shouldering such an undertaking, but
that Is exactly what Mrs. Perry Powell,
3460 Carrolton aTenue, has done and will
continue to do.
Mr. and Mrs. Powell plan buildings
together, but owing to the absence of
Mr. Powell, to whom the building is only
a side Issue, as he lectures over the coun
try, Mr*. Powell handles the construction
superintending entirely, even to letting
the contracts In the absence of her hus
band. Sbe has made a success of thir
| teen apartment buildings, the last one
: having been recently completed out north,

j of Yale, who wrote a whole series of

] count for my lifelong love of mathemat-
I lcs - My father was a mathematician and
, I majored it in college. But the begin
ning of my construction work began when
wo were living In Tipton, many ye-ars
ago. Dr. Powell and I decided to build
| anew home and we started making
plans for our bungalow, but before they
were completed Perry was called on an
extended lecture tour through the West
that lasted for several months. And
when he returned not only were the
plans completed, but so wag the house,
and we were comfortably ensconced In it.
Then aud there my family reputation as
a builder was established.
"Construction work always has held a
fascination for me though, and after
moving to Indianapolis, frequently when
riding downtown on the street car, a
building of unusual structure would at
tract my notice aud I would get off and
look it over thoroughly, noting particu
ltyly Its construction work. Dr. Powell
and I always plan our apartments, too,
and If he has to leave before the plans
are completed I finish them. It Is great
sport to work them out together."
! “I con see the fun In the planning of
them." aald I. "But I must confess the
managing of that bunch of construction
workmen aounds far from funny. Did
you ever have any trouble with the men?”
"Noj not any real trouble," reßponded
the feminine builder, "but I had the fun
niest experience at one time. It wasn’t
a bit funny while I was doing it, In fact.
It came perilously close to being a trag
edy. You know reinforced concrete work
has to go in up to a certain point all
In one day. I didn't know that.

"Well, one morning the men were
putting In some reinforced concrete
work and about 11 o'clock they be
gan to give out and the foreman
•aid, Mrs. Powell, I have no men
to relieve this crew, and these are
giving out. I am up against it, and
the work will all be to do over.’ I
didn't know just exactly what I was
going to do, but I told him to keep
them at the Job until I returned and I
hopped Into a machine and sped over j
to Indiana avenue and went up one side J
of the Rtreet and down the other, gather- I
lng colored men for that Job and In an
hour's time I was hack at the building
with five stalwart negroes following in
my wake, and I shall never forget that
foreman’s astounded look as he trailed
In. And after It was all over I sat down
and giggled over the mental picture of
my dignified self walking down Indi
ana avenue with my African bodyguard.
But I saved the day.
"I have dealt with all kinds of men
and have always found them as courteous
and respectful as possible. They recog
nize m.v authority just the same as If I
were a man and tbelr bearing toward me
has never showed a hint that they thought
I didn't know about things because I was
a woman. If a woman really knows her
work and applies herself In a business
like fashion, men *s ill regard her In the,
same light as they do an efficient male !

MARION, Nov. 23.—Dr. William Mac-
Lake, former chief of the neuro-psychi
atric division of the medical department
of the air service at Mitchell field. Long
Island, N. Y., has taken charge of the
work of preparing the Marlon National
Sanatorium for the advent of shell
shocked veterans of the World War. fol
lowing the resignation last week of Dr.
Prank R. Hutchins, who succeeded Col.
A. B. Crampton as medical director and
superintendent. Dr. Hutchins’ home is
in Indianapolis.
The Marlon sanatorium Is functioning
or a National Military Home under the
temporary command of MaJ. Fred C.
Runkle.
Dr. Mac Lake, who is a noted specialist
in nervous and mental diseases, Is su
perintending the re-equipment of the
buildings here. He Is well-known tu
Army medical circles, having served as
consultant neuro-psychiatrist for the
Southern department of the Army in 1018.
It was announced at the sanatorium
that the reconstruction of six barracks,
to be used as wards for the reception of
neuro-psychiatric patients, Is being rushed
to completion, and that two of thesa
buildings will be equipped to receive pa
tients within the next twelve days.

pany to the board of public works.
A letter from F. C. Jordan, secretary,
to the board describes the improvements
In this territory as follows:
“Complying with an order received
from the board of public works dated
June 25th, we have installed 1.084 feet of
eight-inch pipe in Dakota street from
Morris street to Ray street, and forty
three feet of six-inch pipe for the con
nections with the Jones street, Wilkins
street and Vinton street mains, and in
compliance with a further order of Nov.
10, we have Installed forty-eight feet of
eight-inch pipe and 204 feet of tlx-inch
pipe in Ray street, from Dakota street
to a point 307 feet west of Dakota street.
“Complying with orders received from
Mr. John C. Loucke, chief of the Are
force, and Mr. F. C. Llngenfelter, city
civil engineer, we have Installed the fol
lowing two-way and steamer connection
Darling fire hydrants on these lines:
“3650 —Northeast corner of Dakota and
Vinton streets.
"3651—Southeast corner of Dakota and
Ray streets.
"3652—North side of Ray street, 300
feet west of Dakota street.
"From time to time during the past
two or three years, Fire Chief Loucks
has given very careful consideration to
the question of a more adequate fire serv
ice for the large packing plants in this
locality and recommended that a feeder
main be laid and that additional hydrants
be Installed so that adequate fire service
might be furnished to the six or seven
packing plants. The installation of the
eight-inch and six-inch lines, In ac
cordance with your orders, .will materi
ally increase the fire service In this
neighborhood, the available water sup
ply being more than doubled by the in
stallation of the eight-inch pipe and the
connecting up of the dead ends on Jouea
street and Wilkins street.”

retail dealers are urging Christmas shop
ping be done early.
Not only is better service given, but
the person who makes his purchases now
will have a much wider range of selec
tion as many of the articles now on the
shelves of retail stores could not be du
plicated before‘Christmas, merchants say.
GLASS WORKERS SEEK INCREASE.
HARTFORD CITY, Ind., Nov. 23.
Hand window glass workers are asking
an Increase of 12 per cent in the wago
scale for the coming year. The request
has been forwarded to the National Asso
ciation of YVindow Glass Manufacturers.
About 300 men would be affected here.
