used In the art of eliminating e fire
which 1 saw at the fire congress at the
Coliseum were things of beauty only to
be rivaled by the ChristmJs tree decora
tions at the 10-cent store. Nor were they
the only attraction on the program, for
Leon L. Wolf of Cincinnati, who is tour
ing the country gratuitously, giving
demonstrations la s’ientiflc methods of
fighting fires, was something to arrest
the attention in his white all-wool rai
ment.
When I arrived on the scene Mr. Wolf
wss the center of an admiring crowd.
With unconcern he was tying an insig
nificant piece of rope in knots. Now. a
knot sounds like a common ordinary
knot, but It’s not, at least not when Mr
Wolf does it. In all my experience with
knots I never was introduced to so many
members of the knot family, having al
ways been under the impression that
there were knots which stayed tied and
those which didn’t. However. Mr. W if
Introduced me to the Blackwell Hitch,
the Square Knot, the Granny, the Span
ish Burton, the Carrlck Bend, the Sheet
Bend, the Cat'spaw and the Rolling
Bitch. Then, as a final to the act he
gave ns a special Introduction to the
Bowline which he assured us was the
most important knot ever tied.
THREW THE
ROPE AROV.ND HIM.
Then he seized on a victim and tied
him like as though he were a water cask
to be swung ttboard in a heavy sea and
assured his audience that he couldn't
move his arms if he wished, which we
already knew. By that time we knew
how to save a man by tying >him up In
■ rope.
Then we had a little course In the art
of picking tp a man. There are sev
eral ways >Oll can perform this feat.
Tou can do it yourself or you can let one
or two people help you. Os course the
most heroic wav is to do It yourself.
After a little practice in this. I decided
I might be able to rick up our office
eat without dropping her. It caused me
considerable debate to decide which
looked the most awkward; the man do
lng the picking up or the individual
who didn't know how to dispose of his
feet when he was “picked.”
I had hopes of seeing a free vaudeville
show when the ladder instruction was
staged, but I was disappointed. Mr.
Wolf proceeded to a moderate elevation
on the ladder which was secured below
by two Individual".

CAUTION ANYWAY.
“Now.” he said, “you are Just as safe
• s If the ladder were acalnst a wall.”
Just then the ladder waved threaten
ingly. and Mr Wolf yelled. "Hey. can t
vou hold a thing still,’* and I decided I
would prefer to do my life saving from
the wall.
About this time we had some Instruc
tions in the art of lowering a ladder
from the side and from the front. Sud
denly a perfectly good diminutive cat
perambulated in front of the lowering
ladder. The fire chief stopped business
while kitty Inspected the equipment. Ma
jestically she stalked across the arena
to the stove and ladder lowering was
resumed.
My hopes of a melodramatic escape
from a burning building were to be
realized when Mr. Wolf began instruc
tions in rescuing from a blazing struc
ture.
“If you -.-anted to put a ladder at the
third story of a ten-story building, how
many feet up the wall would you place
It?” h asked us. Nothing doing, that
•ounded too much like the nth degree
to suit me, at least you would have to do
some calculating.
At last, the fireman gracefully ascends
the ladder to res-ue the heroine from
the burning building. Instead of allow
ing her to put her arms around him he
ties her hands with a rope to keep her
from scratching him, I suppose. Aud
•s the last feat to spoil the scene he pours
water all over her.
Six Men Fined for
Violating Speed Law
On evidence showing six men violated
the motor speed law- by driving at breaic
neck speed through residence districts.
Judge Pritchard meted out a fine ®f
?1 and costs to each.
The six were: T. G. Arnold, 1845
Ludlow street; John Alexander. S2 West
Morris street; John Obely, 81b South
Delaware street; Merle Horton, 914 Ash
land avenue; B. A. Whelan, 436 North
Holmes avenue, and H. I’. Willcuts, 913
East Washington street.

35 Bullets Go Wild
JACKSON. Mich., Nov. 30.—Mistaken
for bootleggers. William Bugg, a Jack
son Jeweler, and Joseph Larue, an op
tician, both prominent citizens, narrowly
escaped being shot to death today when
thirty-five bullets were fired Into their
car.
They failed to obey a summons to halt,
thinking they were being held up, and
speeded away, pursued by officers and
bullets until the chase ended in front of
the Jackson police station.

NEW STATE PARK
Kenry County to Have Fisher
man’s Paradice.
When nenry County obtains Its Me
morial park to be built as a lasting
commemoration to the county’s sons
and daughters who participated In the
world war. It Is planned to stock the
lake which will be one of the features
of the park, with game fish and open
the waters to piscatorial artists.
This Information was sent to George
N. Mannfeld, superintendent of the di
vision of fish and game of the State de
partment of conservation, who Is aßked
by the Henry County Association to as
sist in building the lake and also to
stock the waters from the State hatch
eries.
According to the association members,
Henry County so far has given sixty
four acres to the park project. Efforts
are being made by the populace to ai
qulre thirty acres adjoining and an addi- |
tional four acres, the latter the prop
erty of a tranctlon company. The thirty
acre tract Is appraised at 55.000 and It
is planned to raise this amount by
popular subscription In a single day's
drive.
Mr. Mannfeld has assured Henry
County people that his division is ready
at all times to assist in the laying out
of the lake and the State will stock the
waters wnen the rroper time comes.
At the annual banquet of the Henry
County Fish and Game Association, at
tended by more than 100 members,
ninety-seven members voluntarily en
tered Into an agreement not to shoot
quail this season. This step Is taken lu |
order the birds have a chance to propa
gate and multiply.
Conservation officials believe the ac- i
tion of the Henry County men will have j
a good Influence on other game protec- j
tlve association in the State, and thus!
quail will be given further protection to •
r. produce In goodly numbers. Unless
some such voluntary action Is taken or
the law Is made more restrictive, quail |
soon will become sadly diminished in j
Indiana.
Beveridge Plans
Number of Talks
“The Development of the Constitution j
under John Marshall,” is the title of the
address to be made tomorrow night by
Albert J. Beveridge at Ann Arbor, Mien.,
before the faculty and students of the
University of Michigan and the lawyer*
of Detroit, who are planning to go lti
a body to the college city. Mr. Beveridge
will leave Indianapolis today. Following
his address In Michigan Mr. Beveridge j
will go to New York City to deliver an j
address before tho attorneys of that city
on the subject, "The Growth aud Mean
ing of the American Constitution.” Mr.
Beveridge recently was a guest of the
newly organized Marshall Club In Buf
falo, which practically every young law
yer of the city has Joined.
On his return from the East Mr. Beve
ridge will address the students and
faculty of De I’auw University and law
yers of Putnam County at a meeting
in Greencastle on Monday night. Dee.

versltv and the Monroe County Bar As
sociation. He will speak on Dec. 13 at !

Man Dies at Traction

street, died suddenly at the Traction
Terminal Station last night while wait- !
ing to meet some friends. Coroner Kob-
Inson said death was due to cerebral
hemorrhage.
The coroner Is trying to notify rela
tives of the dead man.

Farm Bureau Calls
Executive Meeting
An executive meeting of the American
Farm Bureau Federation has been called
by J. It. Howard, president, for Satur
day, at the Claypool Hotel, it has been
announced at the headquarters of the In
diana Federation of Farmers’ Associa
tions. The national organization will
hold its annual convention here the first
three days of next week.
Representatives from the four regions,
into which the United States has been
divided, will attend the Saturday
session.
Girl, 22, Found Dead
in Home Bathtub

LA POItTE, Ind., Nov. 80.—Miss Ger
trude Travis, 22, daughter of Charles
Travis of Mill Creek, was found dead
Monday morning in the bathroom of the
house where she roomed. A cut was
found under the chin, but no weapons
were found In the room.
A sealed letter was found on the bu
reau, addressed to a Chicago man, who
is thought to be her sweetheart.

DANVILLE, Va., Nov. 30.—A wooden
box containing $:S00,000 in Liberty bonds,
war savings stamps and life insurance
policies stolen from the Bank of Halifax,
at Houston, Va., eight weeks ago, war.

at Midway, Va.

CHICAGO, Nov. 30—Mrs. Jack Robin
son, 1615 North Lawndale avenue, is busy
explaining to friends how she found a
genuine diamond, clear and scintillating, .
and appraised by a Jeweler at SIOO, In
the craw of a chicken which adorned the
Robinson dinner table.
Mrs. Robinson bought the fowl late
Saturday from the Quality Market, 3620
West North avenue. It had originally j
come from the Fulton Market, where it
bad been dressed.
Every one of Mrs. Robinson's acquaint
ances has taken a lifelong pledge to clean
her own chickens.
