OF TRUCK SERVICE
Ohio Traffic Managers Favor
Legislation.
CINCINNATI, Deo. 9.—lntercity motor
truck service should he placed under the
State and Interstate jurisdiction as
the railroads, according to traffic mana
gers and representatives of Industrial and
commercial organizations from all of the
large cities in Ohio, -who met at the
Hotel Slntr.n at the quarterly session of
the Ohio State Industrial Traffic League.
The ship-by-truck movement was one of
the principal topics of discussion at
the conference.
The practice of truck owners and small
hauling companies, who do not ordina
rily engage In intercity freight hauling,
cutting in on the business when they can
find no other work for their vehicles, is
having the effect of discouraging efforts
on the part of the dependable hauling
companies toward the improvement of
their service, traffic experts agreed.
President Guy L. Cory declared that
“fly-by-nlght‘ truck operators are In the
habit of performing Intercity hauling
services at rates far below those of re
liable companies whose trucks are at the
service of shippers every day in the year,
when there is little demand for their
trucks, but that the outsiders boost their
rates above those of the established com
panies. when business is on the boom.
This practice, he said, creates unfair
competition, and motor truck freight
“TlN*ling has. therefore, become an un
attractive business. The result is that
there are never enough trucks to be nad
when shippers need them.
The league went on record as favoring
a plan to seek State and Interstate leg
islation. which will place intercity motor
truck transportation on a common car
rier basis. When controlled by State
public utility bodies and the Interstate
Commerce Commission motor truck op
erators engaging in intercity service
would be required to file rate tariffs pro
viding for reasonable and just charges
that could not be raised or lowered ar
bitrarily, it was pointed out.

Marion Home Receives
More World War Men

struction of two barracks at the Marlon
branch of the National Military Home
as psychopathic hospital wards has now
been completed and these buildings are
being rapidly occupied by veterans of the
World M ar, who have been ordered here
for treatment.
According to the announcement today
Dr. William Mac Lake, chief surgeon
of the Marlon sanitorium. acommoda
tlons will have been provided by Jan.
15 for more than 400 patients, who are
being sent here by the United States
Public Health Service.

Judge William H. McGannon, chief
justice of the municipal court at Cleve
land, Ohio, will be tried Dec. 14 on a
charge of second degree murder. He Is
charged with killing Harold C. Kagy.

evening which the two and John W.
Joyce spent together. Joyce recently
was acquitted of the same crime. Judge
McGannon was a witness at that trial.
The Judge declares that he was not
with Kagy and Joyce when the former
was Bhot, having left the two a few
minutes before the fatal shooting.

Nicholson Appeals for Elks’
Christmas Fund.
Meredith Nicholson, the noted Indiana
author, today issued an appeal In be
half of the Elks' Christmas fund which
Is being collected to fill the stockings
of poor youngsters. It is as follows;
If you were a poor kid and Christ
mas came round and all you got out
of It was a heartache, you'd think
this a mighty poor sort of world;
you'd be terribly hurt and bitter;
and so would I.
Now, those good fellows, the Elks,
give a Christmas party for children
every year. Last Christmas I stood
In front of the Circle th"ater and
saw the youngsters coining out from
the entertainment they had just en
joyed. bearing their gifts In their
hands. There were tired mothers in
the line, convoying children with
white, pinched faces. The young

thetic. It was all like a dream to
them that they had been brought
downtown In nutomobiles and taken
to a show and then whirled home

KOKOMO, Ind., Dec. 9.—A celebrution
by the 165 local members of .Murat Tern- j
pie. who recently formed a Shrine Club
here, brought to this city about 300 ;
special guests from Indianapolis on
Wednesday night.
There was a gorgeous parade marked
by many fancy stunts and costumes of
Oriental splendor such as were worn In
bygone ages when the Far East was in
Its beyde.v. The blare of bands, accom
panied by the tramp, tramp of well
trained military squads, made the oeca- j
slou most Inspiring.
Murat Chanters, led by Arnold Spencer,
rendered a number of vocal selections and
in the evening an elaborate banquet was j
provided for the guests from Indinnap- ■
oils, which included speeches and n j
cabaret program.
Eluier F. Gay and Charles Orblson re- 1
sponded to the address of welcome given
by O. H. Havens of this city. Instru
mental numbers were given by Mrs.
Clyde Suoddy. Mrs. Eugene Laymon,
Miss Miriam Kline. Leroy Lacey and Mr.
and Mrs. Ernest Whitley.
After the banquet, dancing and cards
concluded the program. The special
train which brought the visitors returned
to Indianapolis at midnight.

tory this year, but the value, figured on
the average prices being paid Dec. 1, Is
about $400,000,900 less than that of the
1919 crops, according to final official fig
