By DAVID COST. “•There were once two cats of Kilkenny, Each thought there was one cat too man;, So they foug#t and they fit, And they scratched and they bit, “Till, excepting their nails. And the tips of their tails, Instead of two cats, there weren't any," “Ton don’t say so,** exclaimed Puss Junior, He was seated In a comfortable inn in the town of Kilkenny. “Well, that's the way It went,"s gfhed the Innkeeper, a good-natured sort of fel low. “One of the cats belonged to me, so that’s the reason I happen to know so much about It.” “That’s Interesting,” said Pnss Junior. “Won't you tell me more?” So the good natured host sat down and began: “I raised my cat from a kitten; he was a fine one, I tell you. Marked Just like a tiger, and the way he could fight— well, there wasn’t anything in the cat line In this town that could touch him until, one day, a stranger arrived. Just an ordinary, every day tramp cat: scarred and scratched in many a battle. Well, he made his home in the stable, and wouldn't leave. “Every ni-rht there was a fight be tween him and my cat, till, finally, one morning, when I went out to the stable, I saw only the tips of their tails and •a few of their nails In the yard. Ah, he was a cat!” and the Innkeeper sighed and looked at Puss Junior. “You would hare liked him, my noble sir." “I think I should have,” said Puss, “for he must have been very brave. But I must be on my way.” The Innkeeper was sorry to have him go. for he was fond of cats, but that didn't make any difference to Puss. So off he went. And by and By whom should he come across, but Litde Tommy Green. “Cats, cats, nothing but cats to* day,” said Puss to himself. “Here’s the boy ewho put the poor pussy cat in the well; she hasn’t been well since. I'll wager,” alid then Puss laughed at the pun he had made. “Helloa. Tommy Green.” he cried, “how's the poor pussy cat that never did you any harm but killed the mice in your father's barn?” “Oh, she's all right," said Tommy Green. “She's got five little kittens. I gave one to Johnny Stout. He pulled her cut, you remember.” “And have you been kind to her?” asked Pusst “Yes, sir,” said Tommy. “I’ve never forgotten what you said to me,” which pleased Puss Junior immensely.—Copy right, 1022.
