Members of tho Detroit bop yd of edu cation have taken up opposite camps In debate on this question. It arose with the development that pupils in some of the city's public schools bathe In the swimming pool entirely naked. “I cannot believe that our pupils bathe In tho 'altogether,' ” Board President Edward I>. Devine declared, when he learned of the situation. Ivo Is sup ported in his stand against the practice by Andrew 11. White, a Sunday school superintendent, and tho congregation of tho East Urund Boulevard Methodist Church. A suggestion that tho wearing of bath ing trunks be made compulsory was vig orously attacked by supporters of tho affirmative In tho debate, who declared that such procedure would be “prudish.” The question remains on the board's books for further argument. PASTOR COMES TO DEFENSE OF POOR FLAPPER Physical Attributes Healthy, Says Minister Who Favors Bobbed Hair. CHICAGO, Juno I.—“A handbook for flappers, or what a young girl should know” might be the title for tho list of “don’ts” advised by the Rev. Mrs. Alice Philips Aldrich of the Illinois Vigilance Association. She is superintendent of the welfare woik of the association’s welfare department. Alarme l by the modernity of the young girls of today, issuing of instructions for their conduct promises to become a popular sport. Some of the “don'ts” from tho Rev. Mrs. Aldrich follow: Don’t be entertained in the back room of a cabaret or saloon by a man. Don't drink anything, from beer to whisky, or smoke, while you're with a man. Don't accept a lift home from a smiling stranger In a luxurious limou sine while you’re waiting for a car. Then tho special service department of the Evanston Women’s Club Mothers is sued a set of rules for their prides „nd joys to follotv. The rules are: No automobile ride3 for young people only. Closing hours for parties should be stated on the Invitations. Par ies should be adequately chap eroned, particularly in.going to or coin ing from evening entertainments. But anew champion of tho much ma ligned flapper comes forth in the person of the Rev. Dr. John Thompson, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church. "I have no sympathy whatever for the people who indulge in wholesale Indict ments of the flapper,” defends Dr. Thomp son. ‘ .She has been entirely misunder stood and misrepresented, her grand mother was guilty of the same rnisde m-auors.’’ The flapper's physical attributes, her bobbed hair and short skirta ore healthy, Bays Dr. Thoini>son. But the plucked eyebrows he detests. “Vo young man,” he declares, “can ad mire an 'excuse for an eyebrow.’ ” RALSTON POINTS TO DEMOCRATIC ACTS IN STATE (Continued From Page One.) Do not misunderstand me. I do not mean to convey the idea that our coun try mads no progress under Republican Administrations. i"r it did. My tnought Is that th financial system of the Na tion was dominated by the money *t of the East. and that the pov. '-rices ; i j.rv. • t.t a shortage was I’cJM-iKrVvj -I, s . .. a:, vs it was nf fiut'T the f.nanc'.’tl "f t!m p: :T V cm’.. ;■ . U tlm ccc.il-T-y . yj,..V.J ;!..ng filing a perm itieiit sense of business and finance. But this is not all, my fellow country men. The enactment of the Federal Re serve Act was one among the great achievements of this Nation. In solemn contemplation, it seems like a blessing Divinely visited upon this Nation. With out it think what would hava bean tha awf. l consequences, when the time cama for our country to prepare for and move out into the World War. Without it, we could not have made a stagger toward doing our part in saving civilization, un less we had first sold ourselves to Wall street in bondage for a hundred years. With it, we took care of all our own ex penses without borrowing a single foreign dollar and loaned to our associate na tions to help them to meet their war ob ligations, billions upon billions of dol lars We actually gave them more money than a K< publican Administration can collect the interest on. It was our ability to do this that made it possible to bring the war to a close, when it ended and we will never know how many American boys were saved by the war ending, when it did. CONTROL PASSES AMID GOOD WORK. Following soon upon the cms9 of the bloody and sickening conflict Involving all the great nations of the earth, the Democratic administration began tho work of reconstruction. It sought to firing our country back to the normal ways of life and business that our peopio had long enjoyed before everything was thrown out of joint by the war. Thia wonderful work of pacification and re habilitation was just getting weil undet way, when unfortunately the Govern ment passed from the control of our party to that of tho Republican party. Since this change in party adminis tration things in the main have been going from bad to worse. The world had grown so big under eight years of Democratic rule that Republican statesmanship grew dizzy when it at tempted to survey new conditions. As a result business went upon the rocks ned it is yet stranded. Labor ceased to have employment and a million homes are now without the needful comforts of life. If this be the normalcy we were promised In 1020 God grant that it may soon become only a bitter mem-i cry. I do not wish to speak with apparent flippancy of any position taken by the Republican party ns a question of na tional or of International magnitude, but i must confess that, giving that party credit for being free of partisan preju dice. X have never been able to under stand its hostile attitude toward the League of Nations. 1 know that mueh has been said about the danger of if gefing this country into entangling al liances with foreign and of its conflict with our constitution, but that sort of talk never frightened its really; big lawyers and statesmen. CANNOT REVIVE LEAGUE SUBJECT. Now I realize that tho League of Na tions will not be an lssuo in this cam paign and that nothing Democrats caa do now will bring It again before the Senate for further consideration. Still I would not be quite frank if I did noi say that 1 regret that the Versailles treaty was not ratified by tho Senate, Besides, had this country gone into the league. 1 have not a doubt out that our iu tornatio! •>! trrde relations would hava been decidedly improved over what they are today. It would have afforded a stimulus for the revival of business in Eu rope and doubtless in other countries and this* would have meant prosperity here.J by this course we would have solved many* economic problems distressing busingsal and pointed out to capital a safo course" to pursue. But since we could not get the league, I have been willing to take the next best thing Though it is but a very short step in what 1 conceive to be the right course to pursue, I was willing to see the four* power pact tried out.
