Bishop Fisher Talks on Industry in India Methodists Hear Story of Leader Ghandi and His Purpose. "Labor leaders in America and Europe can learn a grefct deal from Mahatma Ghandi. non-cooperatlonist leader of In dia,” Blshcm Fred B. Fisher told the bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church at their meeting now In session here. Bishop Fisher, a native of Muncle, Is now resident bishop of Calcutta of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He has Just returned from India where he has traveled extensively and made a survey of the social and religious conditions. Hu has pres) *ed at several of the conferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Bishop Fisher has knowledge of the lead ers on both sides of the recent upheaval in India. Including the high rank officials of the Indian government and Ghandi, who is now In prison. "Ghandl’s methods are distinctly Oriental In some Instances,” continued Bishop Fisher. “But, nevertheless, the spirit behind them would have a salutary effect in Oc cidental labor troubles If only employed. I am convinced that In this sense Ghandi Is far ahead of his time and industrial relations will struggle toward his stand ards for many a day. Ghandl’s devotion to the cause of the people Is superb. When violence has occurred it was al ways perpetrated by the fanatical fringe of his followers and was immediately repudiated by Ghandi himself. Ghandi learns each side of the dispute, offers himself as gobetween to both operators and employes and convinces them of bis earnestness by refusing to eat until a settlement is accomplished. This may seem a picturesque and futile method, but in India It convinces the people of his sincerity and takes hold of the popu lar imagination. In other words, Ghandi is a great moral and spiritual leader who t r ies to settle conflicts along moral Hues. "American and European labor lead ers are, as a rule, more materialistic than Ghandi. They do not bring to bear the immense moral and spiritual forces In the world to the aid of their cause. In this they lose tremendous power and advantage. Until they come to evaluate truly the moral and spiritual interpre tation of social problems, they will con tinue to be only partially successful by methods of small strategy and bargain ing. No commanding leader In the Oc cident has as yet laid down the great moral truths Involved In our labor trou | bles as has Mahatma Ghandi in India. American and European labor leaders are practical politicians. That Is what Ghandi Is not, and Is one reason why he does not fully succeed In this day and age. But there will come a time when his methods will succeed, when the moral sense of Justice is more highly developed In the public mind. "The Ghandi movement Is a revolution of mind and heart, not of arms, and out of it 1* emerging anew soul In India, which the world at large will some day recognize.” MOTHER, GIVE “CALIFORNIA FIG SYRDP” Harmless Laxative to Gean Little Bowels and Sweeten Sour, Colic Stomach —Babies Love It Millions of mothers depend upon gen uine California Fig Syrup to clean and freshen baby’s stomach and bowels.
