16 ASSOCIATION STARTS OPIUM WAR IN CHINA Eradication of ‘Blind Dens’ Is Sought by Opponents of ‘Pipe Smoking.’ SHANGHAI, June 23.—With reports of International Anti-Opium Association de claring that the opium poppy is being grown extensively in certain provinces of China and that much of the suffering from famine is caused by the planting of the poppy instead of wheat, a nation wide campaign against opium now is under way. An investigation of opium smoking here reveals the facts that palatial opium 'V.ns of this city—world famous a few years ago—have disappeared; that the wealthy Chinese are smoking the "pipe” Jr. beautifully fitted rooms in their own Aomes; that the poorer class** seek out badly-kept dens, carefully hidden, and •hat the coolie class has resorted to >pium tea. I'p until 1917, when the dens were closed by law. the opium palaces were rhe most popular gathering places of the Chinese. There were two famous opium palaces in Shanghai—the Nan Chen Sing and the T’eh Chin Sing. With some twenty-four other dens they were licensed and under police protection. The “kong,” or great opium couch, arranged to accommodate two smokers, the lamp and other smoking equipment being placed In the center, was the chief article of furniture. The “bong” was made of lacquer or red wood and was richly Inlaid and intricately carved. An air of culture characterized the place. Paintings by old masters hung on the walls, rare porcelains adorned the rooms, and masses of growing plants and blossoming flowers were artistically irranged. Public sentiment approved of the dens. They were social centers, and business running into the thousands of dollars i was often transacted. i Today sentiment has swung to the op ; posite extreme. The dens, which are i illegal, are run with great secrecy arid , are in constant danger of being dis | covered and raided by the police. Often the room is a blind and entered by a sliding door or the old trick of going through a wardrobe.
