In ItH culture. A flu? flavored witter or

greatest perfection, tho ground nhould

Tho hilU iIioukl bo about ten feet apart.

As tho vine begin to run branc h and

which will throw tho wholo vigor of tho

An overloaded melon vino will pro

fehould bear in mind that tho root oi

tho hill, I very injurious to tho crop.
The melon ground cannot bo broken
too deep beforo tho vine begin to run,
but it i n positive injury to tho vino for
tho plow to go three Inches below the

Great care ohould bo t niton in hand

Tho first melon thnt net on tho vino

Grow leg; Potatoes Under Straw.
11. Y. NAMrrfan, lq. SVr. In your
laut number of tho Farmer, I notieo a
ulatcmont of my friend Dr. Moher rcb
ntlvo to raining Potatoes under M raw.
Homo year dinco while on a viU to the
interior of tho Stato of New York, I
paw tin entiro Held planted In tho nmn
rcr named by tho Jloctor. Of the dim
ccaa of tho experiment 1 wa never in
formed. Jin t an experiment which I
mado somo five or mx year ngoeon
vlneed mo that potatoes could bo raUed
tinder BtrftW, riw. without any prrpnration
of the )i7. Having a quantity of
wheat straw nenr a pieco of ground 1
was planting with potntocri, I concluded
to try the atraw-covcring process. Tho
o7, f I may do call it, wa hard yellow
dsiy. On tho durfaco nnd witlvmt any
frtpuation of tho ground, I distributed
my rotatoc. covering them nomo nix
or eight inches with Mraw -mid did
nothing moro to them. They grew
finely, nnd In tho full I took hold of the
ton and draxrrd my crop. I found the
tuoors of ft good dize, nnd nice, bright
And clean enough for tho boiler! and
tho yield much greater than of those
planted in nod ground tho usual way.
'Visiting to further test tho dtraw cover
ing plan, nnd having no straw of my
own, I gave ft neighbor, two year ago
a barrel of seed. Ho planted after 1113'
directions, but tho noason was do ex
tremely dry that tho crop entirely failed,
undoubtedly from tho fact, thero did not
ftccumulato moisture enough in the
straw to produce vegetation.
Last season ho tried again, the result
was a good yield, nnd specimen exhib
ited by him at our ngircultnral fair,
vrcro equal to any on the ground. Thus,
I think, wo hnvo demonstrated tho fact
that no preparation of tho soil is nee
rssary to inuro ft good crop, with but
little expenso ns they require no nt
tendance nfter planting, and tho gath
ering is n simple, ca,y "and expedition s
process. ours, Ac.,
