Bit can you seo wbcro all the extras bare gone? Ask your Court House Clique, and tbey bang their beads as dumb mates. Consider well these things then act as men tote your own choice, and porn the dictation oi party lenders. Now is the time to brand Urn reckless extravagance with your condemnation See that yoa do it, and all will be well. Independent Candidate!. Jno. T. Cooley, independent Demo cratic candidate for Senator, is one of the "old settlers" of the county. His Strong arm and vigorous system haw done their part in felling the forest and improving the country. Ho is a plain unassuming farmer once elected to the legislature by the Democracy steadfast in his adherence to principles, he could not be induced to abandon them and follow tho dictation of party leaders and Court House cliques. The contest is between bim and Aaron B Lane, we can choose but one way, in favor of the independence of Cooley m . a ft . a or the man wno nas tue moral courage to adhere to popular sovereignty. Dr. A. J. Biddinger tho independent candidate for the legislature is a man of great moral worth consistant in his steadfast opposition to the unjust de mands of the slavo power, and well qualified to represent Franklin County Francis A. Bauer the independent candidate for Treasurer, is a German by birth has resided in this county 25 years, is a farmer and merchant by oc pation, and veil qualified for the duties cftht office. Mr. Bauer reads, writes and speaks both English and German, fluently. To the business qualifications requeue for the office, we cheerfully add, that he is no politician, and if elec ted will be independent of the Court House clique. John Jj. Shank candidate for county Auditor, is the eon of Themar Shank, who resides just below the 'Case' Dam. John, was raised on the farm and was taught in the school of expe rience. For several years he has been engaged as a civil engineer on Ue ca nal and various .Railroads. He stands high in bis profession and will, no doubt, make a superior Auditor, if elec ted. "Low Lynn" independent candidate for Sheriff is too well known in this county to require eulogy from us. Iiis brawny arras and hawk-eyes, once in possession of a King, we will guarantee his aafe conduct to JeffersonTillo. Try him friends, and let us see the Black Smith "blowing and striking" in an other place. Judge Giles Gant, independent can didate for county Commissioner is well acquainted with the county affairs, has age, exporienco and the will, to prac tice strict economy in public expendi tures, and will doubtlessly, if elected, ar rest the present extravagance, so far as is in his power. The Court Hoese clique grow sick at the thought of the Judges success. His election would be to them as gooa as a uose ox urandretk'aj ... M -J!'l At pills. Suppose we administer them. -1 L'JLlI-li-l The Caucus Candidates. On Tuesday next, you choose between the candidates of two tickets. On that of the Court House Clique, you will find for Senator the name of Aaron Burr Line. Mr. Line is a cleTer, inofleinlfo man, whose ambition has led him to the association of men, and adoption of measures, repugnant to his his own sensoof truth and right. Ho removed from Butler county, Ohio, for the pur pose of securing political promotion, to obtain which, be risks the forfeit of moral charactor. and the sacrifice of bis own offspring to the shrino of Bac chus. If yoa wish a subservient tool to the bidding of the Court Houso Clique, vole for him. For Representative, is the name of Dr. Thomas Giflord, a man utterly des titute of any sense of shame; whose po litical lifo bas been a continued shifting from party to party firat a Whig then an Abolitionist next a temper aace man then Anti-Temperance, and finally a genuine siraon pure Democrat, and the nomineo of the Court llouso Clique for the Legislature. Surely, per fidy has its reward. If you like such stuff, vote for him. For Treasurer, is tho namo of Michael Batzner, whose only real merit consists iu bis faithful subserviency to the man dates of the Clique. His election would be) a full endorsement of the profligacy and extra vara nee of the leaders. If yoa approve of Court House, Poor House and Iron Fence extras, voto for Mike, and pay your swelling taxes. For Auditor, Dr. John Quick is pre sented for your endorsement and re-eleC' Von. The Dr. has a largo and respect able family connection, tho enly fact that secured his nomination. Tho great objection to tho Dr. is his want of back bone. He lacks the nerve to siuuh the interference of the Clique. If, in the face oi his unexplained draft for 81,800, ithout authority of law, drawn in fa vor of Esquire Robeson, and othtr gravo official errors unaccounted for, yoa can vote for the Dr., pitch in, he is your man. Washington Andrew Jackson Glide- well comes next, as the model candidate for Sheriff, about whom and whoso qualifications we bave nothing to say, believing that Jeff. Colescott bas said enough. We mourn, as one without hope, over the fate of poor Jack. He came from his father's larm within tho influence of this corrupting Clique, a clever, social, promising young man How sad the change, as yea look upon his distorted features, bis ruined as pect. If your purpose is to entirely destroy him, vote for bim, and thereby keep him away from . that .retirement which alono can reclaim him. Robert Stoops, for County Coramis sioner, finishos our comment on the caucus ticket of the Court House Clique. He is from the same neighborhood, and of the namo kidney of the retiring mem ber, Mr. Calfce. If any difference, 3Ir Calfee is the best qualified when sober. Stoeps, we aro informed, is ignorant and stubborn, and utterly unqualified for the place. It is humiliating, that the purposes of the Clique are so para mount to the public good, that such i sot of blockheads must be kept in charge of our County affairs. If yoa are op posed to a change in the administration of County affairs, vote for Stoops, of course. If be is elected, the old ca bal is sustained, the Clique is triumh- ant, and all investigations suspended. Commissioner Hiatt vs. Henry Berry. We refer the reader to a communica tion from Elmer Hiatt, one of the county Commissioners. It is edifying to witness such passes between old friends, and we feel that when "rogues fall out and quarrel" honest men should stand from under. Our friend Elmer, talks out right plain to Henry, and if wo did not know the adage, that "bark ing dogs seldom bite," one should cx pect to hear the junior of tho Democrat demand "pistols and coffee for two." Mr. Hiatt says "it is a malicious false hood" that this Iron Fence letting was unknown. That this same Mr. Henry Berry Jr., was the man, who months ago, volunteered to procure part of the street on the east side of the Court House, vacated and enclosed by tho fence, and now denounces the letting and denies any participation or knowl edge of it. Out of the mouth of your own lriend we have conv icted you, and by bim, branded you with a "malicious falsehood." The Clique, then, did know of this letting and nenry Jr., had been active in bringing it about. It is rather unkind in Elmer to dis close Henry's cuts at Goble, but "mur der will out," and we pray the timo ap proaches when more and important de velopments will be made. Wo regard the defence of Mr. Hiatt as a failure he docs not approach the charge. We have not complained against enclosing the Court House, but the time and manner of letting of that enclosure is what we bold up to public condemnation. The present state of our finances docs not warrant such a fence. The interest for one year on the cost of the Iron Fence would build a neat and substantial wooden one, to nerv all pur- .a.. . at a I 'VS V 14 1 1 Ski V U V I .Vfc e UUI4 warrant the improvement now author i rr . .1 . izel. The secret letting, without com- potition is what we condemn. The lot ting to ft pet partizan favorite, a non-res-ident of our county, who bas already carried awny thousands of dollars, of our taxes, received as extras on Court Houso and 1'oor Houso. It won't do lilmcr, your ne ts in this particular won't pans muster, but you will do right well when poking truths at tho Junior edi tor. Hit him fleam, he can stand it. Consistency is a Jewel Mr.Voorhes, of Terre Haute, deliver ed a speech at the Court House cn Fri day last, to a respectable number of persons, consisting of a majority of Re publicans and disaffected Democrats. Ho charged tho Republican party with being in favor of placing tho negro on an equality with tho whito man, and attempted the proof by stating that the Republicans in Congress, somo two years since, voted for, and elected Mr. Banks Speaker of tho JIoino. During thoitrugglo which preceded hi elec tion, Mr. Banks was interogatcd ns to his opinion of Slavery. In tho language of tho Declaration of Independence, ho roplicd, "I belicvo that all men aro crea ted frco and equal.'' Such being hi answer, and he a leading Republican, according to the reasoning of Mr. Yoor hc. the Republican party is in fuvoi of negro equality. With reasoning equally logical, we assert that it is a part of tho crowd of tho Democratic party to placo the poor b boring man of the country, not only upon ft level with tho negro, but upon the samcfooting with the slave of the South; and that, in their vocabulary, they aro known as tho "mud sills" of society. Senator Hammond bails from tho Stato of South Carolina, and is a leader of tho self styled "National Democratic" party. Of his genuine Democracy there can bo no question. By that party be is honored with a scat in tho Senate of the United States. Not long since, in that sacred temple, where tho represen tatives of the freest nation on tho face of tho globo assembled to legislate alike for the poor as well as tho rich, in a speech mado there, bo said, that, every where, in all countries, thcro must bo a class of men to do the drudgery the servile labor of society that in tho South they wero called slaves, but in the North we don't call them so, they aro the "mud sills of society." To Honest Men of all Farties. On Tuesday next you are called on to exercise tho dearest right known to frco- men. It is your duty to vote, and to vote your own choice unbiased by prejudice uninfluenced by partisan cliques. The names of William S. Hoi- man, and ricawint A. Hackleman, aro before you for the oflico of represent tivo to Congress chooso ye between them as honest country lovina men. Mr. as e Holninn has most emphatically shown himself to bo "all things unto all men" anti-Lccompton to-day and Lccorap ton to-morrow. Tho denouncer of tho English substitute before his nomina tion as "a mean contemptible trick," and for tho sako of that nomination its sub sequent eulogist and zealous advocate Tho advocato of the administration o James Buchanan in or.o portion of the district and its prudish apologist in an other. In ßhort tho januscd-ficcd po litical trickster, whoso ambition has in ducod bim to sacrifice every honorable impulso and generous emotion to politi cat success. Wo turn with pride and pleasure from the antecedents of Ilolman to those o Judge Hackleman and defy their sub mission to a candid public P. A Hackleman born und raised in our own beautiful valley-the son of our venerable Mnj. John Hackleman, received bis-first impressions amidst the trying conflicts ol pioneer life, tho purity of which havo marked the pathway of his subse quent career. As a citizen, lawyer and politician be presents a clean, unsoiled record, cf upriirht consistency. What ho was and advocated before hianomin ation ho is and advocates now. No po litical aspirations could swerve or swaj him from mature political convictions We are proud that ho was born in this county; that he is our present standard bearer, and would rather bo beaten thousand times, with such a man, with such a consistent political record, than triumph with a poor contemptible, in consistent, timo-ecrving dough-facod demagogue as ho has shown up his op ponent to be. , Choose yo between them, as honest men. Importing Votes. Tho clique in this placo, are much alarmed they fear tho defeat of their favorite pots. Batzner Clidowell and Quick. Wo havo heard so much said by these partisan leaders during this canvass, about election frauds and imported votes, that wo begin to fear thcro may be somo truth in tho rumor that they aro importing votes into tho County to savo their pets, and tho district to save somerset Ilolman. Keep a close watch friends at every voting pUco mark thesoifinirranf tcan derers challenge every unknown voter mako him take the prescribed oath, and if he commits perjury, put him through on tho fast lino. The Court House Clique. Tho Court llouso Cliqae.roposlng with perfect safety in tho overwhelming ma jorities heretofore cast by tha "Democ racy," most arrogantly assumed to over ride tho popular will, by forcing the nomination of Dr. Quick on tho convention, over their known prefer ferenco for John C. Uurton. They ap peal to tho appaient fairness by which tho thing was done in open convention, but fail to vindicate the courso of tho Clique, from tho old smoke pipe down to the merest whiffet of the party, to pac k that Convention in favor of Quick, and in opposition to Burton. They seem tn havo forgotton in their arrogance und confidence of strength, tho services f tho Burtons in times past rendered the party. No longer di they appeal to the mil itary services which left John's right arm on the plain of Beuna Vista, but like brigands, they throw up their hats for tho man who will go farthest to to promote tho:r projects. Elated with success, and thoir confidence of victory, they decido to try tho popular pnlso to its utmost, and in deflanco of common decency, they contract for the Iron fence. They now tremblo at their own audaci ty, as wavo succeeds wave of publio in dignation from every preciuct and ham let. The Cliquo Cto running "to and fro" In despcrato effort to repair the fatal blunder. Tho hand-writinjr is upon the wall. Tboa art weighed in the balanco and found wanting. Go faithless servants, as "the sow to her wallow and the do to his vomit." Kansas Gold Mines. j Wo aro indebted to Wm. McClure, Eq., for the following extract from n privato letter from 3. It. MeJluro, Esq., in relation to tho gold excitement in Kansas. Ho says: "Thero is a great excitement in this part of Kansas about tho gold discov eries on Pike's Peak, at tho South Fork of tho Platto. Tho distance from Fort Riley to tho mines is about 400 miles to go directly up tho rivtr, but it is seven hundred to go tho old Santa Feo road by" Council Grove. I have no doubt but reports aro truo. JIany persons havo passed through hero on their return and mado an exhibit oftho gold, they nil report that gold is to bo found in large quantities as rich as tho mines of Cal ifornia. They say that from ten to twenty dollars can bc'mude per day. It is generally believed, and companies an forming all through the Territory, and on tho borders of Missouri to go out early in the Spring. If gold should be found to exist in extensive quantities, it will enrich this part of Kansas. As here is tho ncarcstjdjco to procure sup plies. I would not wish to induce any person to go out on my representation, for all that I know about the matter is derived from others TIkTO is no doubt but that gold can be (bund but vo had better wait and see if it exists in larg enough quantities to pay." The lying lnsinuationsoftheClique nailed, The last week's Democrat, announ ces rumors and suspicions, that, tho Re publicans will, on the eve of tho elec tion, get out and vote an exclusive He publican ticket. The writer of that libel, knew it was falso in every particular when he wrote it. The wish was father to tho thought, and with what exulting shouts would they greet such a result. They well know that there will do no other can didatcs in the field, than thoso already announced, and they tremble in the fear of the success of tho independents. We anticipr.te this, lying cbargo will bo made at every poll, on the day of election, and now warn our friends and all friends of truth, to cram tho lie, down every blackguard's throat who makes it. There aro but two tickets, and will be but two, viz: that of the "Court House clique," and the independent frecmens' ticket. Between theso, freemen of old Franklin, choose. Make your own so lections, and when tho hireling dogs of the county cliquo, seek to influence your choice, or pry into your ballot, treat them with that dignity and con tempt their insignificanco and insolence demand from freemen. Bemexaber That every vote cant for William S. Ilolman is a voto given in favor of ad mitting Kansas as ft slave State with 36,000 inhabitants, and rejecting her as a free Stato until she has at least 93,420 inhabitants. Ilolman without qualification, in his Market llouso speech in this placo, de clared himself in favor of requiring nil tho Tcrritorys hereafter, to bave a popu lation equal to tho ratio required for a representative in Congress, which is now 93,420. lie mado no exception as to Kansas, and if ho is honest, and elected to Congress, will vote against horadrais sion as a free Stat until sho has 93,420 inhabitants.
