For years ho was extensively engaged In market gardening and fruit raising, and the produce of .his small farm supplied for years many of the tables ot' the town. Was Victim of Bad Accident. In the latter '80s, Mr. Satia was the viotlm of a bad| accident, which had left him a cripple for close to twenty years. When tobogganing was fashion able during the long winters that Iowa could once brag about, a fine slide was built on what is now a part of Electric addition Just west of Ninth street and north of Stc-.te. Mr. Satia had the care of this slide, as it was near his home. It was evening, and the merry-makers were! leaving after an afternoon of thrilling sport. Satia had placed the Iron bar in at the bottom of the slide, to prevent its use during hours that thoi slide was not being operated. As Satia was leaving for home sev eral little boys begged liim for just one more slide. He acceded to their wish, and took them down himself. He for got about the bar until the instant that the toboggan, loaded with passengers, was shoved off from the top of the long ohute. It -was then too late, but Satia staid by the toboggan, in order to save the boys from Injury. He braced his feet In the moment that was left him to think, and broke the force of the terrific impact Both of Satla's legs were broken Just above the ankle. So great was the force of the blow that the iron bar was snapped In two. Lee Farber, one of ithe boys, was injured slightly, and today carries a scar on his face to remind him of the experl ence. Had not Satla staid by the to boggan as ha did It is likely that ail of the youngsters would have been killed outright. Led Busy Life. Charles Satla was born in Chau tauqua county, New York, April 3, 1829, being 79 yeE.ra old last Friday. When he was a lacl of 5 years of age his par ents moved to Ashtabula county, Ohio. Young Satia lived there until he was 23, when hi) left for the west, first stopping in Colorado and .later in Cal ifornia, whe:re he was engaged In the lumber business. He remained in the west for five years. During the years that Intervened from his first trip west until he settled in (Marshall county in 1864, 'he crosiied the (plains -to or beyond the Rocky Mountains In a wagon five times. Worked for "Lucky" Baldw "While In Nevada on one of these trips west In 1861. he worked ror "Lucky" Baldwin, who owned a ranch near Carson City. While working for him he married Elizabeth Curran, who was also in Baldwin's employ. The young couple went east to New York, by the way of the Isthmus of Panama., and in 1864 came to Marshall county and moved on a farm north of the city. Later, Mr. Satia was em ployed at Sleight's elevator and when he left SleUfht's employ Ibe acquired a part of the Sleight farm. He then •bought nine wares of land lying east of Ninth street, and north of State, which he developed Into a market garden and fruit farm, end on whtefli he Jived un til he died.
