a Good Buying By Shorts and Commission Houses Causes Prices to Advance CORN IS FIRM AGAIN TODAY Small Receipts and Unsettled Weather Helped Make a Strong Market—Ton* in the Oats Market Exceedingly Dull However, and the Provisions Market Was Quiet and Steady. Chioago, April 10.—Wheat today op ened strong, on good buying by shorts and commission houses. Sales were Vight however, and as a result of this iltuation, prices advanced about a cent la the first thirty minutes. Small re ceipts in the northwest were a strengthening factor. May opened at 90 to 90%, declined to 89% and sold at 90%. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chica go receipts were 190 cars. Wheat was strong all day, chiefly because of reports of damage by dry weather in Kansas. May closed 1%0 higher at 91%@91K. Corn. Corn was firm, because of small re ceipts and unsettled weather in the corh belt. May opened at 67% to 67%, and for a time held within that range. Receipts were 149 cars. The market ruled strong the entire session, May closing %, higher at 67%. Oats. Oats were exceedingly dull. May opened at 52 and held at that. Re ceipts were 154 oars. Provisions. Cummins to Address People April. 30— Other Items of Interest. Special to Times-Republican. Grinnell, April 10.—Mr John D. Smith died here last night at 7:30 at the home of his brother-in-law, Mr. William K. June, from which place the funeral will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Hadley arc re joicing in the birth of a son at their home. Eli Allen has been confined to his home by sickness for the past week or more, and is reported now as being tittle if any better. Mayor Wiley has published a call for bids for the construction of 18, 400 feet of sewer of vitritied sewer pipe and cement, and thirty feet of iron sewer pipe, and of 18.400 feet of water main, according to plans and speciti cations in the office of the city clerk. Bids are to be opened on the evening of April 25. Passion week will be observed by special services in the Congregational church next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings. Services are also scheduled at the Methodist church. Mrs. H. W. Spaulding has had the pleasure of a brief visit from her sis ter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Rich ardson, of Lowell.
