It is this that has drawn so many of our Iowa citizens away front us. For Instance on valentine day, when snow was falling In Iowa, we motored twenty-Ave miles over a paved coun try road to the sea coast at Santa Monica, where Ike Spears lives. Over coats and wraps were carried but not used, and when we arrived at the beach there were children barefooted playing in the water and th"e sands. In the afternoon we were entertained nt a Marshalltown dinner party by Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. M. Stone on the San Gabriel boulevard, another paved county road, where some thirty live former residents of the home town sat down to a picnic dinner out of doors under a large live oak tree and the shade of the tree was actually en joyable as a relief from the direct rays of the California sun. Charlie Stone is 'mother of those fortunate ranchers who added about Jls.OOfl to the value of his farm the moment the county psved h's road and transformed his location from that aUvr.ij an ordinary country road to site on the "boulevard." We have been enjoying several days of the same kind of weather but. of course, it Is not ac'.wtiHy guaranteed, as one may see from the published an nouncement of the Iowa picnic, which is to be held Feb. :2. or "if it should rain that day then on Feb. 27, and if it should be raining, .hen It will be held on March 6."
