ill—an enterprise of John P. Cook—
^tch has been elected a number of
years, and as yet of f»rf little advantage
to any one. Messrs. Friend & Culbert
«on first tried their band at running it,
and did run it for a couple Of years but,
^tumstances were sueh that it did not
prove profitable. Others hare tried it
•with like success. The great difficulty
is the insufficiency of water. We learn
that Henry Bagley, of th»« place, has
now taken charge of the mill, and is about
Trying a plan of obtaining water, which,
although altogether experimental, strikes
Of Us bearing a fcasability upon its face.
It is a fact that in this vicinity the great
est amount of water can be obtained by
digging from eight to fifteen feet, and at
which depth is a sUaU of quick-sand
containing water. Below tbfa is diffi
cult to obtain much water. The present
plan is to dig down to the quick sand and
then dig a sewer or channel about one hun
dred yards in length, into which the wa
ter from the sand may And its way, and
from thence to be conducted to the well,
at the rear of the mill. If this eiperi
merit proves successful it will be quite an
advantage to our place and the country
surrounding. The mill is laige, and erec
ted and finished with a great d«*al of
pains and expense, but without water is
of little benefit. We hope that it may
prove successful, and thai Mr. Bagley
may fully realize his expectations.

fd^Yesterday, Mr. FfcA** Dcics
uw entered our office bringing two large
water melons, which he placed at our dis
posal, and which were soon disposed of.
Hie treat was worth noticing—they were
the best melons we have seen this year
no pumpkins about them, nor were they
raised in a squash patch. To poor ed
itors and printers, who are shut up in
the office, day in and day out, they were
truly quite refreshing. FsiK is

PUBLIC SFIRIT.—This
is something
which in some placet is much talked of
-hut which exists ouly in words, and we
verily beliere Tipton is one of those pla
ces. Mr. Holtslander, who has just return
ed from a trip through the western paxt.of
the State, says he thinks there is less im
provement going on in Tipton than in
any town he passed througlu This real
ly ought not to be told abroad, and our
citizens ought to blush to hear it. Here
we are situated in the midst of a fine
country with every promise of reward for
our exertions, and yet indolently settling
down, and doing nothing except to devise
ways and means to avoid die usury laws
the State.
Und then such an amount of jealousy
etc cists hero! Since Tipton was laid
out, not one stroke has been taken to the
the advantage of streets. The town coun
cil proposed to have Cedar street graded,
and offered all that was in their power te
obtain it. Sealed proposals were receiv
ed—all of which were beyond the means
of the Council, as each bidder had in
view the one idea of getting rich out of it.
Mr. SweUand, who is about the only en
terprising man in town, offered to do the
work for about $400 less than any one
else, and yet he could not liave it for fear
he would realize a shilling or two out of
it, although far below what any one else
offered, and so our streets must remain
ungraded and witeont a bottom, until the
present generation dies off or goes up
Nebraska, and a more enterprising set
come in.
iA)so, many are wanting to build, but
HHterial is dear and scarce
$5
ISO is of
fered for brick, and yet at this prioe, with
good chances of burning, whereby a good
p*efit can be realised, yet no one can be
found to take hold it, and so the town must
languish for want of Wick ^ta build with.

that he bought what
purported to be 8,000 which fell short
2,000. This does not appear to be an
isolated case of the kind. He proposes
to "have inspection laws passed at the
next session of our legislature, requiring
shingles to be put up in bunches of 500,
and full count, and appointing inspectors
to see that they are of proper length,
good material, and full count, and brazil
them according to quality*"
The idea appears to us to be a good
one.—MusceAine

We intended to have addHK few re
marks on this subject, but received the
following communication from a reliable
citizen of this place, which supplied us
for this week. So long as our citizens
continue to give in their "experiences,"
we shall only add "amen" to it.
Ma. fcniToa :—I was pleased to notice
in your last week's issue a communication
exposing the imposition that lumbermen
have long been practicing upon the citi
zens of our State. We heartily approve
of the hlta of petitioning our Legisla
ture to pass a law appointing lumber In
spectors for the different lumbering ports
on the Mississippi. We hope to see pe
titions early circulating, asking the Leg
islature to pass a law that will prevent
this fraud and deception. In the first
place, our dealers in lumber are imposed
on in purchasing of the article of shin
gles, they to keep themselves safe, dispose
of them according to the count at which
they purchased. 8o you perceive the con
sumer is the one that is wronged, and sus
tains the loss. The Muscitine lumbermen
being brought in contact with the keen,
shrewd Yankees of the pineries and oth
er northern lu.nbering districts, partakes
of this greedy avaricious spirit, nnd when
they come to dispose of their lumber, they
will agree to sell you so many thousand
feet, but in uiue cases out of ten, in a
thousand will fall short from two
to three hundred. Unless tiie purchaser
goes in person after his lumber and then
he must have some little experitmce, or
they will pull the wool over his eyes at
lhe
rate of one hundred feet to each thou
sand.
A lad was sent to Muscatine after lum
ber, with orders to a certain lumberman,
to bring so many feet, and to seud a fair
quality. Instead of the lumberman act
ing like an honest and honorable man,
he loads the lad's wagon with poor, mean,
wind-shaken, miserable knotty material,
which fell short in measurement, and
charged from three to five dollars more
per thousand than good lumber of the de
scription sent after was selling at, (and
this is but one of many cases.
It is high time that rascally acts of this
character should cease. There is no
doubt that persons desiring to purchase
lumber, can do far belter by going to
Davenport or Moline than to Muscatine.
It takes one day longer to make the trip
from this region, but you can purchase
lumber at enough lower rates and receive
fuller measure, as much more at least, to
compensate a person well for the experi
ment. The lumbermen of Muscatine
have had their harvest—they have waxed
fat at their enormous prices and in their
remarkable shrewdness in measuring and
now seek to kick the buyers that fattened
them.
1
Hie writer
it
the ahere1MM only dealt
at Muscatine, and has had no experience
at Davenporte but the rumor was here,
that mnch could be saved by purchasing
at Davenport, both in price measure, and
quality. This week Mr. Catteli tested
the report by sending teams to Daven
port, and reports that lie has beeu worse
dealt with than those at Muscatine. So
it appears that until some law is passed
to guard the interests of purchasers, they
may 'grin and bear it,' tor go where you
will you find lumber dealers all of a piece
—all tarred with the same stick.
