DEMOCRATIC TICKET. For Circuit Judge. HON. UIIARe A. HARDIN, ot Mercer County Every onco In a while somebody In Stanford recolves a lottor from Co). W. P. Walton, former editor of tho Interior Journal, and now asso ciate editor of tho Loxington Herald. The recipients of sucti missives usual ly bring them to ub to read, for ,tt "eot," Ms cepy rer many a year both by hand and on tho linotype, and often wo wero tho only man In tho or flco who could read it. Which re minds us of ii story ho told on him self in tho Herald the other day. A tramp printer hit Lexington and they jiut hlra on a machine to set somo of Mr. Walton's editorials. Tho printer looked at It ft while, turned it MP" side down and studied it then went to tho foroman and said: "If I had a cornet I might play this Etuff, but 1 m d 1 if I can sot 1L" At that we think Col. Walton's chjrography is nioro legiblo than that of Editor Desha Brocklnridgo of tho Herald or of Enoch fJrchan another leading Lex- Ington nowspaper man, nnd wo have "set" them all In days gone by. OHIO James gave Sonator T. II. 1'oyntor tho scoring of his Ilfo when tho former opened his campaign for United Btates Senator at Nicholas HIo Monday. It James has tho goods on Paynter the later had as veil retire from tho race for rc-elce tlon to the 6onato If James misrepre sented him, Paynter had better ex' plain and do it mighty quick. Our friend Senator Paynter refus ed bold a joint debate wfth Ollla James on the grounds that it might hurt the democratic party in the state Why in tho world didn't ho think of that when he spoke and voted in fav or ot tho unspeakable I.orlmo? PAYING FOR AN OFFICE (Editorial in Courlcrslournal.) Lincoln county has been paying a salary of $200 a year to Us County treasurer but it will do so no longer. The Fiscal Court a few .days ago elected a man who agrees to pay tho county $1(1 a year for the privilege at holding the office. Two bank officials, representing ri val bonks, were tho only candidates for the position when tho court met to bold the election. Candidate No. 1 an nounced that he would bo glad to fill the otfico without salary. No. 2 hastened to mako tho samo proposi tion to tho court, whereupon No. 1 said ho would pay $100 a year for tho cfflce. This was mot and he raised his bid to $100. No. 'i went him one dollar better, and as there was noth ing more doing in tho bidding line, the offico was knocked down to No. 2 who will pay yiO'S for the honor and privilege ot handling tho county funds tor the next two years. This amount the county will rccelvo, and In addi tion will save $100 that it heretofore has boen paying for the services or a treasurer during his two years' lorm. All ot which, it is presumed, will be gratifying to the taxpayers. The competition In this raco, which resulted so satisfactorily to tho Fiscal Court and tho county m general was due, of course, to tho fact that two banks wanted tho custody of tho coun ty money and were willing to pay something therefor. Tho plan smacks somewhat ot putting an otfico on tho auction block but as the two candt wcro able nnd willing fo pay the freight and thcro waa no other nsplr cut for tho position It Is not apparent that anyone was prejudiced ot dls eliminated against luoroby. in any event tho taxpayers of Lincoln county Tvtio will be $702 to the good, are not likely to waste much, Umo discussing tho ethics of uo transaction.
