College Barn
Burned
150000 Goes up in Flames
A FIERCE FIRE
I Sunday afternoon just as the con
gregations ware leaving the various
churches tho alarm of fire was raised
and Ibo chapel bell was rung to
summon help Miss Tossio Wudkins
discovered smoke pouring out of the
barn at tho rear of the Ladies Hall
and gave tile alarm but in a few
minutes it was evident that the
building could not possibly be saved
and all turned to saving Ladies Hall
Tho wind blowing toward tho Hall
made it seem for a few minutes as
if all would go but the wind shifted
Iud tho crowd worked and soon bad
tho fi re uearesttho Hall checked and
kopt under control until the frame of
tho barn fell and reduced the danger
at that point In tho mean time the
alihory near the barn on the west
caught on fire but was saved by
prompt work Soon all that was loft
of the barn was a pilo of smoking
timbers lying in the teller amid piles
of rubbish of all kinds
The origin of the fire is about as
follows During the winter the barn
is used asa storehouse for various
garden products and other property
of the College To keep time vegeta
bles from freezing ° during a cold snap
a coaloil stove is used In tho barn
was a quantity of straw and it is
aida barrel of oil In some way
the straw and oil ignited and almost I
instantly the whole interior of the
barn was burning fiercely Soon the
flames broko out and in about 40
minutes all was over The loss is
estimated at between 1500 and
2000 as there was stored iu the barn
considerable furniture belonging to
Pros Frost tho office furoaturo of tho
Commercial School and several vo <
hiclos two of which burned
A largo crowd of students and
citizens gathered at tho first alarm
and the usual number of idiots was
present Not content with being idlo
they woro at all times crowding near
those who atom hard at work and
hindered as much as possible As a
result one group received several
buckets of water all over them be
fore they would got out of the way
Among those prominent as helpers
iu saving tho Ladies Hull may be
mentioned Max Scott who did tho
work of two or three Earl and Ben
Paddock E A Chapin J M Racer
