A Child of Professionalism I
While we arc hearttoheart talk
ing this winter apropos to football
rules let us not forget to frankly
t discuss that child of professionalism
preliminary practise Western col
leges at least the better class of
them have abandoned this training
period of a couple of weeks prior to
the opening of the college term but
in the east and among leading um
vorsltles the ones naturally expected
to eet their standard on high the
practise though reduced In length
goes on even In violation of specific
rles l thus illustrating the spirit of
trying to get the better of the other
fellow outside tho actual game of
givei i
too many exhibitions
At Harvard though genuine effort
to encourage a sportsmanly spirit is
en evidence tho football men began
their preparatory period on the 13th
of September Drown whore they
take such ethical matters lightly
went even further the candidates be
ing token > to Now Dedford fed
housed and trained after the manner
of league baseball players Pennsyl
vania began two days later Septem
ber 15 Princeton where If I mis
take not there is a rule prohibiting
such preliminary practise com
menced OB the ICth Yale without
professing so much ns Harvard or
Princeton showed even > a better
spirit by refraining from practise un
til September 20 or about five days
beforo the opening of the college
term Incidentally Yale with least
preliminary work of the three over
whelmed Princeton and handed liar
yard a goose egg
This preliminary practlee habit re
veals the amusing inconsistency of
United States college athletic legis
larorsI 1 e of holding tho under
graduates to amateur rules of elIgl
bility while thus permitting and even
encouraging the spirit and tho meth
ods of the professional Caspar
