TAFT AND ROOSEVELT
Cincinnati Oct 22AIl Enquirer
special from Washington pays I
That President Taft and Colonel I
Roosevelt fully understand each oth
er and arc working in harmony and
that the former president is not the
candidate for tho nomination in till
but is convinced that Mr Taft should
again be the standardbcaror is the
statement attributed to Collector
Uiob of New York who was In Wash
Ington conferring with officials of
tho treasury department In reference
to the recently discovered customs
frauds
While Mr Loeb would not permit
his name to be used in discussing the
relations between his former chief
and the president it Is known that
he has boon talking along these lines
to his intimate friends In Washing
ton
Knowing Colonol Roosevelt as in
timately as he docs and being ono I
of hIs confidential advisers 1 and I

taming the closest of relations with I
the president > Mr Lochs discussion I
of tho feeling between the president
and his predecessor Is regarded as be
ing of the highest significance
aayinr gt
to his friends here Is to the effect
for complaints against assesments of
course but with this distribution of
tho burden of maintaining the city
on a fair valuation it will be found
that the owners of modest homes I
probably will find their taxes re
duced nnd a few others will be
raised
Now In view of this situation It Is
important if tho lore have confl
dence in the fairness and good Judg
ment of the administration that a
general council in sympathy with i its
plans and purposes be elected Not
every man who comes around prom
Ising to cut your taxes will do It t
Nor would injudicious cutting bo best
for all concerned In the long run A
reduction of trio tax rate and an in
crease of the assessment always look
better to visitors to the city but at
the same time certain improvements
are necessary and the city must not
be crippled Intelligence and econ
omy are required In fixing the as
seasment and rate Tho mayor him
cf a largo holder of all kinds of
real estate will be affected by the
valuation in all parts of the city and
dependedl
upon to advocate nothing that will
hurt real estate but a general coun
cil whose majority leaders are poll
tlclans with a mayoralty race only a
year away could Involve the finances
of the city embarrassingly and bur

Mr Robertson + has headed an expedl
