Correspondence From Within the

If the resident readers of the Son

bound train over the Illinois Central
road any mornlug iu the year their
train at 9 12 a m would pause at a
small dilapidated station hard by
the right bauk of the Cumberland
liver In a voice that would pierce
the tympauumbut which would con
vey not the slightest intelligence to
the grey matter tho brnkeraan
would announce the arrival at Eddy

Tho quaiut old village which s

lies and apparently sleeps about one
mile east of the station
The inhabitants of Eddyvillo arc

Ihexoint of interest or at least
of cuiiotily to the visitors at Eddy-

In his Uilit from justice after his
fatal duel wth Alexander Hamilton
Anion liurr found refuge in this
same old town of Eddyvillc long
years ago Seme say that the
poiary residence of this arch fugitive
so infested the soil that in after years
a penal institution sprung up volun

Tho population of tho prison nt
present is 170 which number con
tinually lluctuntos with a tondoncy to
decrease willun the lust year Of
this number about sixty nro serving
sentences of natural life and arc
what nro known ns lifers
Another anomaly of prison life Is
tho fact that these lifers nro ap
parently the iiKwt trnctablo and do
cile men within the walls A num

enth Bcntcnco One man has served

In point of age the prison records
reach from the youth of twelve to
the octogenarian who has long since
been case hardened iu his sins A
hoary head is a crown of glory when
fouud in the way of righteousness
but what when found iu the pen
Illiteracy is certainly the ruling
clement in the ruin of these men
Ignorance Is written in every line and
feature of their facos Only a small
per cent of the men have even tho
rudiments of nn education Intem
perance has certainly done its bane
ful work but dense ignorance and
asinine stupidity have done far inure
The records of the prison show
that the deportment of the piisoners
is good and when you take into

their deportment is really remarka

Hy a system of commutation kno wn

havior This method has proven to
be a great incentive to the men Of
course this does uot apply to lifers
The new regime has inaugurated
number of changes which are a vast
improvement over the old lessee sys
tem The present discipline of the
prison is firm but fair and in the
administration of justice the olllcials
aro amply iucrcif1 Tho strictest
obedience is enjoined upon tho pris

is sure to meet with the merited cor

The food served in the prison is
wholesome nnd plentiful and the
prisoners arc without that swarthy
sallow complexion peculiar toinost
convicts The simple laws of hy
giene are enforced aud the health of
tho prisoners is remarkably good
Tho percentage of mortality is ex
ceedingly low
The time of the prisoners at pres
ent is occuped principally in the
manufacture of walking canos tooth
picks and finger rings many of which
would be offered you should you
visit the prison by the imprisoned
venders
Many are the ways of beguiling
tho tedious hours away and each
prisoner has some peculiar method of
accomplishing this beguileinent all
of which has a valuable lesson for
the intelligent nnd thoughtful ob
