Mrs. Cleveland does not drink anything intoxicating. Wonder how Grover takes hi*. The Gentile* of Utah are becoming un ca*}' at the delay in the passage of the Ed munds-Tucker bill. The Idaho press seems to be greatly ex* ercist-d over the proposition to annex the '"panhand'e" to Montana. There seems to he 11 prospect that Secre retary Manning will be impeached, for vio lating tin.- provisions of the coinage law. j ! j In Germ.my, assemblies of socialists are dispersed In the military. The average socialist is not proof against a bayonet thrust. The recent passage of the coast defense bills, by the senate would seem to indicatc that Uncle Sant had been taking n peep at the European war cloud. After a warm debate, the Bu»kett regis tration hill was passed, by a majority of five votes. This is tt 7 e best piece ol work yet done at this session of the legislature. Charles Mackenzie, who rode with Raglan's Light Brigade at Balaklava, died at Harlem recently. !Ie was 61 years old, and wus a pensioned police officer of New York City. Gen. Bragg is said ts object strongly to the inter-state commerce bill because it will drive the railroads further into poli tics, whereas they ought to bo driven the other wav. On another page will he found the text of a bill, introduced by Hon. James M. l*agc, which is designed to stop the sale ol intoxicating liquors on Sunday. it is hoped tiie bill will be passed. General Sheridan, for coast defence, re commend* sunken forts and disappearing ordnance. Our navy then is first-class, for it lias long consisted of sunken ships and disappearing appropriations.— S. F. Atta. Cleveland Phtni Dealtr: "The rotten borough of Nevada is becoming so depopu lated that the nctvly elected .Senator, Stew art, in order to make Ids seat secure in the Senate, desires to annex a portion of Ida ho." The appointment of Arthur C. Logan, ! late superintendent of Custer county, to be territorial superintendent of instruction, may prove to be a wise one. but tiie teach- i ers of Southern Montana would have been ! better pleased had Prof Wylie been reap ]toitited. They economize spate in Utah. In a three room house in Ogden live Willard Bingham, two wives, twenty unmarried children, five married son. with their wives and fifteen children, and two hired men in the attic. This is a mixture «»f lUtighamv and bigamy__ S. F. Alta. OUR NEW GOVERNOR. lion. Preston 11. Leslie. Montana's new Governor, arrived in Helena this week and has taken the oath of office. The tit raid thus describes him : Our new governor is an elderly gentleman and would be rated at fio or fij years of age by a casual observ er, lie is tall and spare with a well shaped head covered by a thick suit of gray hair. Ills whiskers, which he wears Abraham Lincoln style are also gray. His counte nance expresses benignity* as well as firm ness of purpose, and is otn- calculated to impress all favorably with the worth and ability of its possessor. His manner is frank and cordial and marked by the courte sy of hi* class. His attire comports with his demeanor in unaffected simplicity. A disregard of style is evinced in his garments throughout, ! a low vest and exposed shirt front pro ; claiming tiie wearer more partial to comfort than fashion. Neatness goes hand in hand with simplicity in his vesture, and there is a total lack of toilet négligence as well as ostentation. Altogether his appearance is calculated to produce mo.l favorable Itn pressions. The governor chatted pleasantly ol his journey ami current events. He said his family remained in Kentucky, but would noon follow him hither, since he had deter mined to make his future home in Mon tana. Before the war Governor Leslie was engaged in husbandry, but since that j period lie has been practicing law. His ! home is at Glasgow, Kentucky, where his j second wife and three children now reside. He has nine children now living. Between 1871 and 1S76 he was governor of Ken tucky, serving ten months by appointment of the senate and four years by popular election. He lias also been several terms in the state's legislature. PROFIT SHAKING. Profit sharing lias been in successful oper ation in England and France for several years, but it is only recently that the ex periment has been tried in America. Mr. N. O. Nelson, a prominent manufacturer of St. Louis, has for the past year tried it with ills men, and expresses his opinion that it is decidedly the best plan for the pre vention of strikes and lor the maintenance of good feeling between employer and em ployed. Last March lie inaugurated the profit sharing in the factory of the Nelson Mauufacl uring Company, where between 50 and 100 men are employed. By agree ment with the men they were to work 55 hours per week, receive full pay, and at the end of a year, after allowing 7 per cent, on capital invested, and paying hitnself a sala ry for his own services, the remainder of the profits was to be divided equally upon the total amount of wages paid and capital employed. Recently the company de clared a dividend of 5 per cent, on salaries to employes, which lias been paid in cash or in certficates bearing interest. The employes, of their own accord, requested a return to full time, when they were told other manufactories had abandoned the eight-hour plan, and have worked to great er advantage than previously. G G cies to it previously. "ONION BILL." Successful Administration In Idaho Town. ! i ! New Varlr h 9 * Tkorc 2» aouicthing decidedly unique in the civilization of Idaho. In the classic town known as Beef Gap, a gentleman, commonly known as "Onion Bill," was recently elected Marshal, whereupon he became "Chief Birdeli." On assuming the responsibilities of his po sition, he issued a circular from which we cull a few choice items : On and after this date there will be in this town : No more compelling jieopie to drink when they don't feel like it. No more shooting of plug hats. No more drinking of whiskey out of a bottle when the bars are open. No more noisy deviltry. Any man riding or driving a horse into a public bar will be shot. Any man raking down the pot at poker without the cards to back it up will be shot dead. It is the deteaininatian of the new ad ministration to usher In an era of reform, and all good citizens will array themselves on the side of the law. All others will be turned over to the coroner. The comparative ethics which the Chief insists upon are striking. The man who, drives a horse into a bar-room will simply be shot ; hut the w retch who rakes down the not under unfair circumstances will not only lie shot, but shot «lend.
