TRIPLE STANDARD _ Congressman Metcalf predicts Congress will not go along with the Administration’s "t rip 1 e standard" of interest rates. (In one of his weekly radio programs) Metcalf noted that President Eisenhower is propos ing to increase to 3M- per cent the interest rates on Federal loans to rural electric and tele phone cooperatives. “The same Administration is loaning money to commercial utilities interest free, to the British government at 2 per cent," Metcalf said, predicting that Congress will turn down the Administration bill to increase BEA interest rates. HARLOWTON LAND A house Interior subcommittee has approved the Murray Man sfield bill to make it clear that the Federal government doesn't want eight Harlowton lots, half interest in which was willed to the government in 1954 "to be used for a Federal building and first-class apartment ho u s e." When the will was probated, it was ruled that the Federal gov ernment could not accept the half-interest. THU GLACIER REPORTER, BROWNING, GLACIER COUNTY, MONTANA FROM BAD TO VERSE Congressman Baring of Nevada switched to verse in an attempt to convince eastern Congress men that they should support an appropriation to continue buying strategic minerals at home instead of abroad. RETIRING FARMERS Senator Murray has called at tention to the Montana Congres sional Delegation bill to improve the social security program for farmers. The bill would permit farmers to substitute their comparitively high earnings in years between 1950 and 1954 for the lower-in come years 1955 and 1956 in cal culating Social Security benefits. The bill would put farmers on a par with other groups previ ously covered by Social Security, who can pick out their better in come years for the retirement benefit base. Murray called the attention of the Senate to the fact that self employed farmers are retiring four times as fast as the Social Security Administration figured they would when farmers came into the program in 1954. In his statement, Murray praised a member of his staff, Ben Stong. for estimating the rate of farmer retirement better than did the agency concerned. Montana's senior Senator said the bill “would prevent injustice and hardship to many farm cou ples, now reaching retirement age, who because of drought, Benson and other disasters have Cantaloupe 2 for 49c Grapes Per Pound 39C Bananas Per Pound 19c It Pays To Trade at Tribal had considerable less than $4,200 income during the two years upon which their retirement must be based under present law." HISTORY REPEATS The President and the Post master General have told Con gress that mail service will be cut back next year unless the Post Office Department gets more money. Montanan’s were facing the same problem almost 70 years ago. The “Echoes Of The Long Distant Past From Files of the Anaconda Standard" feature in a recent issue of the Montana Standard carried this item dated April, 1888: “The United States Post Office Dept., in a letter to Pat Talent. Butte postmaster, states that on account of the condition of ap propriations for the extension of the service' Butte must wait a little longer for its free delivery system of the mails." LEAD BALLOON The Admnistration's "long range minerals program went over with two Montanans in Con gross like a lead balloon Senator Murray told Interior Secretary Seaton that the plan was "misnamed." He said it is only a “plan of relief lor the lead and zinc industry, only one of the important segments of the mining economy. Congressman Metcalf called the plan "nothing." “As one miner told me." he said, “the Administration’s slid- CHOICE MEAW Lunch Meats 39 c Large Franks 39 c LARD 2 lbs. 39C Graded Choice Beef LEGALS TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Th« !<>llowing described Tribal land is hereby advertised to members of the Blackfeet Tribe for agricultural purposes: Tract 14 That portion East of “K” Hitch in SW I SE4, SE 4 SE 4 Sec. 3, Tup 30N , Kge GW Tract 15 Lots 3 & 4, S 2 NW-4 Sec G, Twp 33N , K«e GW. 159 88 acres.
