NEWS OF SEI RAID
Declines-of From Fraction to
4 Points Noted Through
out the List.
Activities of the German raider in the
South Atlantic and fears of friction over
this and submarine warfare put a damper
on the bullish sentiment in the stock
market today and prices indicated a ner
vous uncertain feeling. Declines ranging
from a fraction to 3 and 4 points were the
rule throughout the list.
Although coppers suffered with oilier
issues in today's declines, the copper
share market is much stronger because of
hardening in the onetal market. Popper
is reported in good demand, reselling lias
ceased and the price Is steadily advan
cing. The same thing is true of spelter.
Utah, which had a sensational rise yes
terday, sold off two points today and
closed 2% points below its high of the
day. United States Steel had a price
range of 2 points, selling off at the close.
Anaconda opened today at 85%, was
high at 86%, low at 85 and closed at 84%.
Butte & Superior opened at 49%, was
high at that figure and low at the « lose,
48%. North Butte was quoted at 22%,
Hast Butte at 15, Tuolumne at 1 13-16
id Davis-Daly at 7%.
News and comment received pVer Wires
of the Paine-Webber company says in
part;
Boston copper letter: "The copper
metal continues to advance and copper
shares have at last gotten into slep.
Many of the coppers are now selling at
prices warranted with the metal selling
at half present quotations.''
Paine letter: "The advance in the mar
ket yesterday was caused by a combina
tion of good buying and short covering.
The demand for coppers has been es
pecially good. Une large Interest bought
15,000 shares of Anaconda. Kleel is taken
freely for 120 again, if the market holds
through the session today It should sell
considerable higher.
Stock opinions received over wires of
the Heilbrunner company say in part:
Journal of Commerce says: "The mar
ket for securities seems still to he ad
justing itself to the view that recent pre
dictions of an early peace have been with
out foundation."
Harris. Winthrop & Co.: 'The st
market has all the earmarks of having
turned for the better."
F. B. Keech & Co.: "The New York
banks have more money than at any
time in their history and a surplus greater
than at this time last year, with a pros
pect of additions being made to this sup
ply."
Hayden. Stone & Co.: "The stock mar
ket has had some readjustment, but 1
broad way there is a great deal .more to
be accomplished. We feel that the big
I* market is over. The prices of
« based on the average «if five years
vious to the war. are still high."
lark, Childs & Co.: "The short inter
est has been extended and good buying
for investment has occurred. A stable
market, therefore, seems likely. Steels
and coppers are logical favorites."

After Advance and a Sag the

Chicago, Jan. 17.—Although reports
that many ships bound from South

something of a setback in wheat prices

Subsequently pronounced weakness de
