Chicago, April 2fi.—New high record prices fur wheat resulted today largely from prospects of continued sharp com petition by exporters and domestic millers. Urgent need of greater sup plies of breadstuff« was implied, es pecially by dispatches from Great Brit ain, and there was official announce ment from Portugal that, owing to the exigencies of the food situation, all im port duties on cereals had been re moved. Stormy weather Involving ad ditioual delay and curtailment of spring wheat seeding In the Dukotas, Minnesota and Canada tended further to lift prices. Trading here, however, was relatively light. Opening quota tions, which ranged from % to higher, with May at $2.58% to 92.54 and July at 92.17 to 92.18, were fol lowed by respective advances to $2.55 and 92.21% and then by a moderate re action. New advance about midday carried the market up 92.60 for May and 92.2.5% for July. Much of the buying on the way up was for commission houses with eastern connections, and was said to be to a considerable extent of a specu lative character. Pi oft-taking sales finish led to violent breaks I I eak st 2%c uct de* .'a nee, with Mav and July at *2*15 4o The close was cline to 4c ad 82.64% to $2.64% «2.16%. Gar scarcity restricting arrivals gave independent strength to corn. The up turn In wheat prices continued also to exert a decided bullish influence. After opening unchanged to 1% bight the market scored sharp gains all around before meeting will back. Unfavorable weather for planting was a bullish factor In subsequent deal lugs, but later weakness of wheat proved much more than an offset. The dose was heavy at a decline of 1 to 3c net. Hushes to buy oats were unchecked. The basis of the demand appeared to be largely the comparative cheapness of oats In relution to other grain. Provision« responded to higher quo tations on hogs and cereals. On the bulge packers were liberal sellers. The quotatb Wheat— Open. High Low.
