High way Cleared and Demon strator Given Every Chance. Mayor W. H. Maloney and Chief of Police J. J. Murphy yesterday aft ernoon "enjoyed" the fastest automo bile ride of their lives in testing: out a big Winton Six being considered as a police car. The machine made 76 miles an hour, with Charles Dameron, Winton service man. at the wheel. About 25 people distributed along the road from the Bungalow to the Five Mile house witnessed the remarkable demonstration. Dr. W. C. Matthews, city physician, snapped the speeders with his special speed camera as they flew past. Word went out. among the Butte au tomobile dealers that the police de partment wanted the fastest car in Butte for its work. Lou Stanhope, Montana dealer, and William Mathew son. district sales representative of the Winton company, called at the mayor's office yesterday afternoon and prom ised to show at least 70 miles for the Winton. City Attorney George D. Toole, who acompanied the party, dropped off at the Bungalow to warn people along the road that the fast car was coming. Within the first 100 yards, from a standing start, the Winton got up a Sliced of 40 miles an hour. Mayor Maloney, holding Ills hat with both hands, watched the indicator on the speedometer travel aroung the face of the dial, wlille lie announced the PROTESTANT CHURCHES dm • following special musical pro will be rendered under the di >n «if William Tretheway, organ n the Grace Methodist Episcopal h, corner Second and Arizona streets, tomorrow*. Chief Murphy's cigar was completely blown away by the wind raised by the tremendous speed of the car. "Seventy-five!" shouted the mayor. Dr. Matthews snapped as the car passed by. He declared that through the camera he caught a flash of some thing passing and pressed the bulb. "With a car of this speed we'll catch anything in Butte in the way of auto bandits," said the chief at the con clusion of the wild ride. It was noticed by the members of the party that despite the great speed the Winton held the road and trav eled smoothly. Mayor Maloney at the conclusion of the demonstration complimented the driver and wanted to sign him up im- | mediately as one of the city's chauf feurs. "It's the fastest I've traveled yet and if I know? anything about it I'll i never go as fast again.'' said the j mayor after he got his breath. j The Big Six Winton that was used j for the demonstration is r stock car j without any special features making j for extraordinary speed. The car is j a last year's model and has already j done nearly 20,000 miles. Mr. Stanhope is pushing the Light Six Winton in Butte as the ideal fam ily car. This machine is sturdy, eco nomical and can do a speed of better than 65 miles an hour. It has proved one of the most popular and beautiful cars ever shown here.
