News of Our Neighbors Fortine Mr. and Mrs. George Day and family were callers at the Wolff home Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Gayhart Johnson of Rexford were callers at the A. E. Johnson home. Mrs. A, E; Johnson returned home with ♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦ To the Taxpayers League and Qualified Voters: During the years of prosperity. Voters and Taxpayers were too busy at gainful employment to examine the quali fications of Candidates for the various offices. The results of that indifference or lack of judgement are now apparent on every hand, Men, far better fitted for breaking rocks, were elected to offices requiring special training and inher ent honesty. Once in office, through cleverly planned and faked publicity, broadcast by racketeering elements in the various communities and, because, of special privileges granted certain interests, re-election of the most incompe tent and corrupt officials was easily accomplished. However, the present economic crisis has awakened Taxpayers and Voters to the tremendous frauds and mere tricious practices that have consumed a great portion of our annual Taxation. Lincoln County is no exception! Every Voter should carefully consider the cost of maintaining the Sheriff's Office. In this there is little opportunity for the present incumbent to "pass the buck" since, he has been in office almost continuously since the county was organized. The outstanding fact is this; Lincoln County Taxpayers have paid a salary and expense account for full time, cap able and efficient service. The Taxpayers have actually made, Frank Baney, one of the largest property owners in the county. Meanwhile, Lincoln County has become notor ious as a safe "hole-up" for criminal refugees from other sections. The question arises, then, "Who has Prank Baney been working for? Perhaps, from your answer for that question, you can arrive at a reason why Lincoln County pays $1340 more each year in proportion to its population than does Flathead County. Even so, with a much higher degree of efficiency, Flathead has decided to make a change because Its own rate was too high. "Are Lincoln County Taypayers paying a premium for incompetence in the Sheriff's Office or, are they being 'Chisled'? Is it a fact that by using his car for transportation of prisoners, Frank Baney, is collecting 12|c per mile for him self, for each prisoner, and a similar amount for each deputy, FOR THE SAME TRIP? What is Baney's objec tion to the use of the railroad that pays the bulk of Lincoln County's taxes, yet furnishes transportation at less than four cents a mile? With Taxpayers unable to make their Tax Returns, why should they pay, Baney, 12jc per mile from Libby and return, on Services that could be made by local Deputy's for one tenth that cost? Does, Baney collect this mileage for official business only, or does he conduct most of his personal business at Taxpayer's expense? Grant ing he has collected fares for auto transportation although without an M. R. C. License, did he also collect official mileage? ># ? ? Granting that an efficient officer is worthy his hire, and, too, that the Taxpayers have paid a high price, what have they received? Firms have been burglarized repeatedly but I not a one of those burglars has been apprehended and con- 1 victed for those burglaries. A ONE HUNDRED PER I CENT RECORD OF EFFICIENCY! One of the most l| widely posted criminals In the Northwest chose Libby as a 11 safe place to rest. Undisguised, with physical character- I istics easily recognizable at a distance, this man Spent nine 11 days at Libby, openly preparing for another "Job!" A 11 splendid example of carelessness, indifference or incom- I petence! II Are Taxpayers of 19S2 willing to pay for the method of conducting a Sheriff's office which was in Vogue in Scotland before the thirteenth century? Is that the source of his authority by which he releases prisoners at will, settles Grand Larceny cases out of Court, overlooks direct Violations of the law (presumably in return for personal favors) and responds at his Own time and convenience to the Urgent re quests from other officers? Is, flahey, actually holding of fice because of his ability as an officer or, because, of his political activity at Taxpayer's expense?» Frankly, in the final analysis, Lincoln Coühtÿ Taxpay ers have been deceived! Their personal safety, the protec tion of their Wives and babies have been entrusted to hands and minds no more capable for the purpose, than are black smiths to perform surgical operations! Crime is modern. Criminals are organised and, as opposed to Law Enforce ment. all forms eo-operate. Therefor, only a moment's thought should be necessary to convince anyone that to dope with Criminals officers must be concientoUs, honest and MODERN, The day of the Bully type of Sheriff is past! Along with the rest of the Nation, Lincoln County Taxpay ers recognise the need of economy: Most of them know, I too, that incompetence Is expefisivc: j A, R.
