ARMAGEDDON AT HAND", DECLARES HEAD OF BIBLE STUDENTS'ASSOC. i < An transportation With street car swamped, with roads and thorough fares choked with traffic and hundreds of people coming from points as far San Diego to hear the famous lec ture, "Armageddon," given by Judge! Rutherford, president of the Interna tional Bible Students' Association at the Coliseum, Exposition Park, Sun day afternoon, a new rescord was es tablished in Los Angeles for attend ance at a public gathering. By 2:30 o'clock, 35,000 people had fought their way along the traffic roads and the overcrowded as street cars and were gathered in the giant coliseum. These were supplemented by the hundreds that waited in cars out in Exposition Park, where they were able to hear every word of the lecture by means of a speaker's device erected by the Western Electric Company for the purpose above Judge Rutherford's had in the speaking stand. MUSICAL PROGRAM FIRST The judge was preceded by a musi cal program which included flute solos by William E. Hullinger, followed by a number of selections by a quartet composed of Mrs. E. D. Sexton, H. H. Rehmer, W. R. Mitchell and Mrs. Alice Ripper, Arthur Hewlett, choir master, led the singing. A sabbath quietness hovered over the great audience as Judge Ruther ford took the stand. By means of a radio device, his speech was broad casted over all parts of the county, and returns from Kansas City, parts of Texas and other states today indi cate that the Judge's audience reached over the entire United States. TO REVISIT OLD WORLD The judge's lecture wsa based upon actual conditions which he found upon a recent tour of Europe. Always a student of world events, the judge will again visit the nations of the old world within a few months, where he expect? to gather material for future lectures and perhaps resolve his in formation into book form, Judge Rutherford is conceded to be one of the best lectures on public plat forms today. He succeeded the late Pastor Russell, not only as president of the International Bible Student's association, but in the hearts of his followers as well. Outspoken and frank in his opinions the judge makes all his issues clear, leaving no doubt in the minds of his hearers of his sincerity and his wis dom. ENDS CONVENTION Because he left an intensive lecture campaign to fill the Los Angeles en gagement ,the judge will retire to his country home at Monrovia, where he will rest a few weeks before his next European venture. With the Sunday lecture, the con vention held by the International Bible Students' association at Trinity Audi torium comes to an end. The convention has attracted thou sands from all parts of the country and has been pronounced as one of the most successful ever held by the association. Here is a full synopsis of Judge Rutherford's address: "And he gathered them together in to a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon."—Revelation 16:16. It becomes the duty of every Chris tian and every order-loving person to sound the alarm announcing the day of God's judgment and vengenance up on Christendom and pointing the peo ple to the divine way of peace and sal vation. The old world has ended and is in travail and distress. The great est crisis of the ages is upon the na tions of earth. Men who think are alive to the fact that the collapse of the old order is at hand. From soçne of these we quote: "There is no settlement in Europe. Governments can do nothing. They are afraid to do anything, and they stand by and allow things to go from bad to worse. 1923 is worse than 1914."—Ramsay MacDonald, M. P. NEW CHAPTER "A new chapter opens in the history of Europe and the world, with a cli max of horror such as mankind has never yet witnessed."—Lloyd George. "Airplanes, poison gas and hatred mixed together are spelling the doom of civilization. America is preparing for war on a scale so colossal that it has no parallel in the history of the world. Our civilization will perish unless we strive for international peace."—Frederick J. Libby. "No man unless he is drunk with optimism can deny that the world is very sick, and it may be a sickness unto death."—Sir Philip Gibbs. For this reason fear has taken hold upon the governing powers and is ex tending to all classes of people. WHY FEAR AND DISTRESS? Whj^do these conditions now exist? Jehovah, the great God of the universe answers: It is the day of the Lord's vengeance. "Come near, ye nations, to hear, and hearken, ye people; * * * for the indignation of the Lord is upon all nations. According to the Bible chronology Gentile times began 606 B. C., were to endure for 2520 years, and ended Au gust 1, 1914. During that period Sa tan has been the God of this world order of society. The end of the world marks the beginning of the exercise of kingly authority by the Lord Jesus, the King of kings. His disciples propounded to him the question: "How may we know when these things shall come to pass, and what will be the proof of thy presence and of the end of the world?" Jesus answered: "The nations w T ill become angry and God's wrath is come. "Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, (quickly followed by) famines, pestilences and revolutions; and these things shall mark the beginning of sorrow upon the old order." Every person must bear witness that these things began to happen in 1914. He further said that there would be Isaiah 34: 1, 2, 8 oi Tit for T By L. r. Today we see this fulfillment in the denom inational churches. The fundamental ists are making a desperate fight against the modernists, who deny the origin of man's fall, the great ransom sacrifice and the second coming of our Lord; and insist on teaching a man made creed and rewriting the Bible, and scoff at the second coming of our Lord. "As it was in the days of Noah," so shall it be at the end of the world. Further the Master said: "Upon the earth distress of nations with per plexity, men's hearts failing them for fear of what they see coming upon the world." Such are the conditions today to which every one must bear witness. ARMAGEDDON NEXT Armageddon was the great battle field of Palestine. There Gideon and his army put to flight the Midianites, who in their distress and excitement destroyed each other. Gideon and his little band typified Christ the Messiah. That fight at Armageddon typified the great and final conflict between truth and error, between right and wrong. It foreshadowed the complete downfall of Satan's empire and the establish ment of the kingdom of peace and righteousness under Christ our Lord. Jehovah through his holy prophet referred to this final conflict as the day of his vengeance: "Wait ye upon me, until the day that I rise up to the prey; for my determination is to gath er the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger; for all the earth shall be de voured with the fire of my jealousy." (Zephaniah 3:8). The nations are now assembled and bound together by com pact and leagues; and yet all nations are making the most gigantic prepara tions for war that have ever been made. HASTENS WAR PREPARATIONS France, although bankrupt, plunges further into debt in producing the most formidable aircraft, with the deadliest explosive bombs that have ever been known. Feverishly she hur ries on in the building of submarines and filling her storehouses with muni tions and war supplies. Britain is putting forth her greatest effort in preparation for war; while the United States is preparing for war on the most colossal scale in its history. Other nations are following the same course; in fact, all the nation are rap idly marching to the great and final conflict, in w'hich they will destroy each other, as foreshadowed by the de struction of the Midianites. Sir John Foster of England, speak ing of this coming conflict, says: is enough to make the angels weep, that after the greatest tragedy the w'orld has ever known the nations should be showing their teeth more in 1923 than they did in 1913. By the ordinary standards of judging, inter national affairs are in a worse condi tion today than 10 years ago. The in ternational agreement for disarma ment made at Washington has not been carried out. Dread is the motive behind all the actions of France at the present time. Though Germany is supposed to be unarmed, all evidence is that the martial flame is burning fiercely on the banks of the Rhine. From Smyrna, to Yokohama the fire is not only smoldering but frequently leaping into flame." Having a vision of this time, the Revelator wrote : clean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet; for they are the spirits of devils w'orking mir acles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the w'hole world, to gather them to the battle of the great day of God almighty." Revela tion 16: 13,14), "Dragon" is one of the names assigned to Satan. It sym bolically represents the devil's organ ization as a whole, arrayed against the Lord and his anointed. (Psalm 2: 1, 3) "Beast" is a symbol of world pow ers, the ruling factors, made up of big business, big politicians and an apos tate clergy; while the "false prophet is a symbol of a system of religion claiming to represent the Lord, falsely representing him, and in fact repre senting the evil spirits, of whom Satan is the chief. Each one of these holds before the minds of the people false doctrines and false hopes. PREPARE WAR They boast of the only ability and wisdom to bring the desire of kind, of peace and prosperity; while at the same time they evolve schemes to rob the people. They prepare and appeal to the patiriotism of the war; while the false religionist rank and file to induce them to go to preaches the young men into the trenches. The people are learning that they have been robbed, deceived, misled and ill-reated, and they growing desperate. The Lord present, the antitpyical Gideon, is turning on the light, that the people may see the true situation. In their desperation, the pow'ers, the ruling factors, are plunging man kind into the great conflict in the hopes of saving the present evil order of society. Had the big business men refrained from exploiting the people, had big politicians faithfully repre sented them, had the ministers of the ii It I saw three un • • man war are now faithfully denominational churches preached the messages of truth, had all of these refrained from deceit and hypocrisy, this great conflict would have been avoided. In this they have failed, and God's day of judgment has 11-16. and quickly burn itself out. The prophets then indicate that those who have faith will cry unto the Lord and he will bring them out of the trouble and into their desired haven of rest. (Psalm 107: 25-30). The prophet Haggai states that following this great trouble the desire of the peoples will be realized. (Haggai 2:7) That desire is for life, liberty and happi ness. This great conflict will awaken the people to the fact that the Lord is here; that the kingdom of heaven liai» been established, for which he taught His followers to pray. Then shall fol low times of restoration (Acts 3: 19-24 many will come through the time of trouble, and these shall be the first ones that will have the oportunity for life. He says further that then they shall keep His sayings shall not see death, and he that lives and believes in Him shall never die.—John 8:51, 11 come. Speaking of the day now at hand, Jehovah said through his prophet Joel: Assemble yourselves, and all ye na tions, and gather yourselves together round about.Let the nations be awakened, and up to the valley of Je hosophat of Zion, and the heavens (eedesiasti cism) and the earth (organized so be the hope of his people."—Joel 3: ciety) shall shake; but the Lord will . • The Lord shall roar out TROUBLE PREDICTED Again trough Jeremiah he said: "Behold, evil shall go forth from na tion to nation, and a great whirlwind (time of trouble) shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. And the slain of the Lord shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; they shull not be lamented, neither gathered nor buried."—Jeremiah 25: 32, 3 ö. The present order of things caiTtot survive the conflict for which the na tions are preparing and to which they are rapidly rushing, because of the terrible instruments of destruction. W. L. Warden, of the London Mail, The next war will last but a I mean it literally. And says: a few days, in those few days, with the new air and gas attacks which have been planned by headquarters' staffs, Lon don and Paris will be wiped out in a night, thus : tion, such as was not since the begin ning of the world to this time, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved."—Matthew 24: 21,22. Jesus described that conflict Then shall be great tribula THEN WHAT? The tangible eviednee indicates that the great conflict will be within the next two or three years and ot short duration. The Scriptures indicate that the trouble will reach a climax in 1925 26. Let the people take hope. The day of deliverance is at hand. The Lord is present and will bring order out of chaos, and grant life, liberty and hgip piness to those who love and obey righteousness. WHAT TO DO Many will ask, Now what shall do? God's prophet answers: "Before the fierce anger of the Lord come up-1 on you, seek ye the Lord, all ye meek (teachable) of the righteousness, seek meekness; it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger."—Zephania 2:2,3. The church was organized in purity to represent the Lord. But under the leadership of selfish and ambitious men, influenced by the great adver sary, ecclesiasticism has degenerated, as now evidenced by the open fight between the fundamentalists and the Our sym pathies are with the fundamentalists. In the denominational churches, how ever, are multitudes of good, honest, order-loving people, who have hope for a better day. They have faith in Jesus Christ as the Redeemer of mankind. They believe that he is the Son of God. They believe in the resurrection, and that the salvation of man depends upon the merit of Christ. They are sheep amongst wolves in the ecclesiastical system. The Lord loves them and is calling to them through his word: "Come out from amongst the wicked systems, that ye be not partakers of their sins and receive not of their plagues. we earth, seek modernists. (John 8:44). some Revelation 18:4. FIGHT IS ON The time has come for truth to triumph. The fight is on to the end. It is a battle betw'een right and wrong, between truth and error. The forces of error are led by Satan, the god of this w'orld, acting through his visible governing factors, an apostate clergy and the principal of the flock, made up of big business men and big politicians W'ho hold religion as a cloak for selfish uses. The forces of truth are led by Jesus Christ, the Messiah, now here. In the name of Jesus Christ, the King of kings, we sound the alarm. We appeal to all those w'ho have faith in God and his Word, who believe that Jesus Christ is his beloved Son and the Savior of mankind, to separate themselves from the wicked systems, dominated by selfish men, and to take their stand upon the Lord's side, and doing this, receive the blessings of this kingdom which God has prepared for them.
